NCAA Division III Week – Regis Student-Athletes as Student Leaders

WESTON, Mass. – Regis College is proud to be a member of Division III within the NCAA, the largest division in terms of number of institutions (446) and number of participants (over 195,000 student-athletes). As Regis celebrates Division III Week April 13-19, certain aspects of Division III athletics will be highlighted, starting with the ability for student-athletes to contribute to the campus community in other ways.

Recently, the Regis College Student Government Association (SGA) held its annual elections to determine the executive board for the upcoming 2020-21 academic year. Three Pride student-athletes were elected by their peers to the SGA Executive Board: Cole Anderson (Falmouth, Maine) as President, Nicholas Pastore (Norwood, Mass.) as Treasurer, and Lauren Mogelnicki (Wethersfield, Conn.) as Secretary.

Anderson becomes at least the fifth consecutive student body president to also be an athletic participant. He is the third member of the track and field program in that span to earn the position, joining Matt Norton (2016-17) and Fred Mathieu (2017-18), with field hockey student-athlete Alycia LeConche taking over in 2018-19 and tennis player Ariana McCormack currently completing her term as the 2019-20 SGA President.

Anderson, majoring in sports management, has made significant contributions to the Pride track and field program over the past three years, including this past winter as he broke the school record in the weight throw with a mark of 15.31 meters (50' 2.75") Feb. 16 at the 2020 GNAC Indoor Track and Field Championships, finishing second in the event. He also holds the outdoor school record in the discus throw, posting a mark of 40.30 meters (132' 3") at Eastern Connecticut State April 19, 2019.

"The better part of my core values can be traced back to athletics. Being a part of the track & field team is a constant reminder that regardless of your highest highs, or lowest lows, your teammates and your community will always be there for you," said Anderson. "The biggest reason I ran for SGA President was that I want to bring a higher level of attention from the student body towards offices and clubs that provide countless opportunities. For example, the Center for Ministry and Service constantly devotes themselves to providing opportunities for students to serve others while teaching the core values of the Sisters of Saint Joseph. Generally, I aim to bring the community closer together with a higher sense of sharing and unity."

Pastore won two individual conference titles at the inaugural GNAC Indoor Track and Field Championships Feb. 16 in Boston, finishing first in the long jump with a school record mark of 6.29 meters (20' 7.75") and in the 60 meter dash with a time of 7.23 seconds. A nursing major, Pastore also performed well at the 2019 GNAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships, finishing second in the 100 meter dash (11.68 seconds) and third in the 200 meter dash (24.08 seconds).

"I chose to become a part of the SGA Board for next year because I wanted to be involved in another aspect of Regis' community and really be an advocate for my fellow classmates. Being a team leader this year for the track and field team has allowed for me to see that I have some areas to improve on in my leadership skills, and I believe that being a part of the SGA Executive Board will really sharpen my skills to be used when it comes time to compete again," Pastore said.

Mogelnicki, an education major, has become a consistent part of the playing lineup for women's tennis since arriving on campus as a freshman in fall 2018. After winning eight singles matches and nine doubles contests in 2018-19, she posted an 11-4 singles mark and an 11-5 doubles record this past season, helping the Pride reach the semifinals of the GNAC Tournament. During the GNAC regular season, she was 6-1 in singles and 5-1 in doubles.

"I am extremely excited to start my new role as SGA Secretary this fall. I am so grateful for this opportunity to serve the Regis College community and give each and every student the chance for their voice to be heard," said Mogelnicki, "I believe that my student-athlete experience will be beneficial to me as I start this new role. I have learned many life lessons and different values through Regis Athletics that I am excited to share with the executive board in this coming year."

Regis College sponsors 20 intercollegiate sports as a member of NCAA Division III and the Great Northeast Athletic Conference.
