TRACK RUNS HOT IN CHILLY CONDITIONS

TRACK RUNS HOT IN CHILLY CONDITIONS

Written by Christine Kloiber

Facing temperatures in the 40s with a little bit of wind and a lot of rain, the Regis Outdoor Track Team wasted no time running between the rain drops to post some big times this weekend at the MIT Spring Invitational. Sprinters and middle-distance runners both set their best performances of the year with still a week to go.

Individual highlights for the Pride included: freshman Ana Baker (Hartford, CT), who set collegiate bests in the 100 (14.25s) and 200 (29.22s); her 200 performance ranked her 8th in the meet, and also gave her the fastest time over that distance by a Regis athlete this year. Nipping at her heels in the 200 with Domingas Gomes (Brockton, MA), dropping her 200 time down to 29.79s, for the 2nd fastest performance of the season. Another noted individual performance was the red-shirting Kate Haslam (Atkinson, NH), who set a huge personal best in the 800 meter run, helped in part by her teammate Beth Frye (Adams, MA) who led the heat out in a gutsy front-running tactic. Haslam broke the 2:40 barrier for the first time in her career, and will look to dip even deeper into the mid-2.30s as the final races of the year approach.

Meanwhile, the New England bound 4x100 meter team (Gomes and Baker, joined by Anyah Hernandez and Samantha LaFrance) dropped their  time by almost a second. With kinder weather, and additional fine-tuning to their exchanges, the ladies will be dropping their overall time very sharply in the next two weeks.

The team's final regular season meet of the year will be held at Brown University on Sunday the 25th.
