GIONFRIDDO PLACES WELL FOR PRIDE AT HUSKY OPEN

WESTON, Mass. - The Regis College outdoor track and field team opened up its season this Saturday at the Northeastern Husky Spring Open. Training through the event, the squad used the meet as a hard practice. But, even while competing through fatigue, windy conditions, and temperatures in the 50's, a few athletes posted solid opening performances.

The Pride started the day with a solid performance from freshman Paul Gionfriddo (Burlington, Conn.). As the team's current indoor shot-put record holder, Gionfriddo continued to boost his stats by opening with a new personal best and new outdoor record. His mark of 39' 7" (12.06meters) with the 16-lb implement bettered the mark of 38' ¼" set by Bobby Ryan a year ago. The performance stands as Gionfriddo's first toss past the 12-meter barrier and signals a stellar outdoor season to come.

The squad's second school record was posted by fellow-freshman Owen McQuaid (Marlborough, Mass.) in the 5,000meter run. McQuaid already owns the indoor record, and managed to shave 3 second off for the men's inaugural outdoor record (17:53.06min).

Other top marks for the team included a 15th placing by freshman Ryan Manning (Hanover, Mass.) in the 400-meter dash (53.79s) and sophomore Sarah Schow (Northborough, Mass.) in the 5,000meter run, running her 2nd fastest outdoor 5k with a performance of 21:58.57.

The Pride will be back in action this Saturday at Tufts.
