REGIS TRACK PERFORMS WELL AT TUFTS SNOWFLAKE CLASSIC

WESTON, Mass.- The Regis College track & field team competed at the Tufts Snowflake Classic this past week. Facing 40-degree temperatures and damp conditions the team still shone brightly amidst overcast skies, aptly posting several strong early-season performances. The Regis athletes took it all in stride notching a couple of school records, personal bests, and top-10 finishes.

On the track the Pride sprinters set some surprisingly quick times. Kicking it off for the squad in the 100-meter dash was freshman sprinter Chandler Davies (Hartford, Conn.) posting his first mark of the season with a team-leading 11.89s, ranking him as the 2nd fastest performer in Regis history. He would double-back later in the meet in the 400-meters dash with a time of 52.74s, a mark that was good enough to place him 10th out of 43 athletes. His training partner Jeremy Israel (Medfield, Mass.) also competed in the 400. His race yielded a new outdoor school record in the quarter-mile with a time of 51.26s. Israel’s time broke the mark set by Adam Heathman (53.01s) a year ago and was just .02s from qualifying for the Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships, also placing him 2nd in the meet.

Israel would later return for the 200-meter dash, with a 23.23s performance, posting the 2nd fastest time in Regis history; placing 9th for the meet out of 60 athletes. Fellow sprinters Carlos Romer (Dorchester, Mass.) and Alex Tran (Lawrence, Mass.) also competed in the 200, both posting new personal bests in the event.
The second men’s school record was captured by thrower Paul Gionfriddo (Burlington, Conn.) in the hammer throw. In just his first venture in the event in collegiate competition, Gionfriddo set a school mark of 25.25meters, a performance that the freshman will look to surpass as the season continues.
For the women, top marks included junior co-captain Anyah Hernandez (Brookline, Mass.) competing in her first outdoor competition, notching 14.33s on a sprained ankle. The short sprinter looks to quickly regain her 13s form as the meets progress. Vaulter Tori Rapsis (Nashua, N.H.) placed 4th (of 17 athletes) in the meet with a mark of 2.75meters. Last, but not least, sophomore Sarah Schow posted two new personal bests in the 800 and 1,500-meter runs.
The Pride will return after Easter Break, competing at Northeastern on April 14th.
