PRIDE PLACES WELL AT TUFTS STAMPEDE INVITATIONAL

MEDFORD, Mass.-The Regis College indoor track & field teams competed at the Tufts Stampede Invitational this past weekend for their penultimate regular season meet. In spite of packed fields and a slower track, the men and women held true to form issuing top performances, just as they have all season long

In the first event on the track, freshman Chandler Davies (Hartford, Conn.) continued his hunt for the 60-meter dash school record. Without a dash race slated for next week, this would be the rookie’s final chance to take over the mark of 7.58s set by Ibrahim Alpha earlier this year. Powering from the blocks, Davies surpassed the exiting record, blazing a 7.42s race. Davies would return in the meet in the 200-meter dash, setting a new personal best of 23.70s in the event, finishing 11th out of 52 competitors. His teammate Jeremy Israel (Medfield, Mass.) finished 3 places higher (8th in the meet overall) also with a new personal best of 23.53s. The marks are the 2nd and 3rd fastest performances in Regis Men’s history.

The speedy duo would be joined by fellow freshmen Ryan Manning (Hanover, Mass.) and Carlos Romer (Boston, Mass.) to set the school’s new 4x200-meter relay record and to qualify for the Division III New England Indoor Track and Field Championships. Romer, in his first meet representing the Pride also competed in the 400-meter dash while Manning pulled double duty in the 200-meter dash.

In the longer events Owen McQuaid continued his steep improvement, now owning every men’s school record from the mile to the 5,000-meter run. It was in the 5k this weekend that McQuaid crushed his previous record (set 4 weeks ago) running 17min, approximately 1 minute faster than his January performance.Freshman thrower Paul Gionfriddo (Burlington, Conn.) also rewrote his school record, pitching the 16lbs implement to a mark of 11.99meters, just inches from the 40 foot barrier.

On the women’s side, the top highlights included sophomore Sarah Schow’s (Northborough, Mass.) performance in the 5,000-meter run, pacing to her 2nd faster performance ever (21:52.83min) while teammate Tori Rapsis (Nashua, N.H.) soared to a 2.75meter clearance in the pole vault, by placing  5th of 18 in the meet.

The final meet of the regular season will take place this coming weekend, where part of the team will compete at the Boston University Valentine’s Invitational and the rest at the MIT-Coed Invitational.
