PRIDE PLACES WELL AT MEETS

Weston,Mass.—The Regis College track and field team competed in their first meet of the second semester. The Pride picked up right where they left off before the break.  With two weeks of double-sessions under its belt. The Pride was poised to use the meet as a hard training session and did not hesitate to post several solid performances.

Freshman vaulter Tori Rapsis (Nashua,N.H./Nashua) continued to make her presence known in New England D3 track and field circle.  Rapsis finished second out of 14 athletes competing in the pole vault. She cleared 9’ ¼” in her final performance. Rapsis finished ahead of athletes from Tufts, Worcester State, Fitchburg, and Keene State.

On the men’s side the Pride’s shot putters successfully employed the technique work that they have been refining to post two more season bests. Senior Nathan Fagundo (Newton, Mass./Boston Trinity) improved his previous best from 7.11 to 7.98 meters. Freshman Bobby Ryan (Reading, Mass./Reading) improved on the colleges men’s shot put record. Ryan recorded a toss of 10.90 meters. He previously held the record of 10.38 meters that he set earlier this season.

On the track, bests were set from sprinters to distance runners. Starting in the sprints, sophomore Ana Baker (Hartford, Conn./Hartford) set a new personal best in the 60-meter dash (8.95s)  and the indoor 200 (29.90h). Also in the sprints were the inaugural performances for sophomore Jovita Nassolo (Ashland, Mass./Ashland) and freshman Katherine Warner (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury), both holding their own in the 60-meter dash and 200-meter dash, respectively.

The Pride’s men’s long sprinters posted two new school records. Adam Heathman (Oxbow, Vt./Oxbow) who already held the school record in the 500-meter dash, took his first attempt of the year at the 400-meter dash. Heathman ran a 53.42s a second faster than the previous record of 54.94s.

The third men’s record of the meet was set by freshman Lucas McCann (Framingham, Mass./Framingham). McCann currently holds the 800-meter record, and added the 600-meter run to his resume as well with a time of 1:30.90m. McCann’s middle-distance teammate, Co-Captain Kate Haslam (Atkinson, N.H./Timberlane), also competed in the 600-meter run.

In the longer distances, freshman Sarah Schow (Northborough, Mass./Northborough) highlighted the team’s performances, setting a new personal best in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 13.01.80m. With the team still shaking off some soreness, the rest of the season should see even more records and personal bests over the next few weeks.

The Pride will travel to Wesleyan University January 22nd for their next competition.
