PRIDE PLACES WELL AT MIT INVITE

Cambridge, Mass.--The Regis College Outdoor Track & Field team travelled to compete in the MIT Spring Invite. Even with tough conditions, the day boasted two new men’s records and several personal bests as the track athletes round into peak shape.

Freshman vaulter Tori Rapsis (Nashua, N.H./Nashua North) continued her string of solid performances, tying her school record of 9’ 6 ¼” in the women’s pole vault. Amid swirling winds, Rapsis tied for 8th place out of 18 vaulters. On the men’s side, freshman Bobby Ryan (Reading, Mass./Reading) improved on the men’s shot put record tossing 38 ¼”. Ryan improved on his previous best of 37’ 9 ¼”.

Freshman sprinter Adam Heathman (Oxbow, V.t./Oxbow) also set a new school record in the long-jump. Heathman competed in his first meet of the year with a leap of 19’ ¾”. Heathman advanced to the finals and placed 5th in the meet out of 14 athletes.  Other notable men’s performances included co-captain Nathan Fagundo (Newton, Mass.) coming close to his previous outdoor best in the shot put, and Yash Shah (Waltham, Mass./Waltham) improving by a few hundredths in the 100-meter dash.

On the women’s side, the short sprinters enjoyed some tail-winds to boost their previous personal bests. Sophomores Anyah Hernandez (Brighton, Mass./Brighton) and Ana Baker (Hartford, Conn./Hartford) led the way in the 100-meter dash. Hernandez and Baker both broke the 14s barrier by tallying a time of 13.88s and 13.94s. The duo would return later in the meet within the 200-meter dash with Hernandez running her first sub-29s race with a 29.66s performance, while Baker dipped under 29s for the second straight week with a time of 28.98s.

Also joining them in the shorter sprints was sophomore Jovita Nassolo (Ashland, Mass./Ashland) setting a new personal best in the 100.  Freshmen Katherine Warner (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) and Shaynice Dorcena (Malden, Mass./Mystic Valley) set outdoor personal bests in the 200-meter dash.

In the longer events, co-captain Kate Haslam (Atkinson, N.H./Timberlane) battled a tough heat in the 800-meter run, while freshman Sarah Schow (Southborough, Mass./Southborough) set a tremendous personal best in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 21:45.39min, improving her previous best by almost a minute, and just missing out on becoming the 4th fastest Regis performer by .39 of a second (the 4th fastest position is currently held by Jeannie Boudreau at 21:45.00 set in 1995).

The Pride will make a trek out of state for their final meet of the year, travelling to Brown University Sunday (May. 1).
