The Regis College Indoor Track &
Field team completed its season this past weekend with several
athletes racking up big performances.
Having graduated 5 seniors the previous two years, the 2009-2010
team was full of new and young faces, none of whom wasted anytime
picking up where their predecessors left off. Three athletes
embodied this most of all, and led the highlights in this past
weekend’s final meet of the season, just as they had
throughout the entire season.
Junior Schallum Dorleans (Dorchester, MA) set another personal
best in the 55-meter dash, speeding just a hair over 7 seconds, and
inking a new record in Regis’ record book. Dorleans earned
several other honors this year, becoming Regis’ first male
captain of the track & field teams, as well as earning the
team’s Most Improved Award.
A fellow teammate joined Dorleans in the men’s inaugural
varsity year with a successful season; freshman Brad Hastings
(Mansfield, MA). Hastings, already owning the high jump and
400-meter dash records, closed the season by running his track
specialty, the 200-meter dash. Winning his heat, he sped to a
23.48s performance, setting a new personal best, and coming within
4 hundredths of a second of qualifying for the men’s Division
III New England Indoor Track & Field Championships. (video of
the race is here: http://www.flotrack.org/videos/coverage/view_video/236483/298413)
Perhaps the female with the fleetest feet this season, the final
meet proved another opportunity to set a fast time for freshman
Bethany Frye (Adams, MA). Frye already owned the 4th fastest
800-meter time every run by a woman at Regis, and fixed her eyes
next on the 600-meter run for the final meet of the year. Having
never run the race before, Frye used her speed and stamina to run a
1:47.44 performance, ranking 2nd in the all-time Regis performance
list, finishing a close third in her heat, and missing qualifying
for the Division III New England Indoor Track & Field
Championships by 1.5seconds.
Even though only freshman, both Frye and Hastings’ seasons
have earned them the Coach’s Award for the 2009-2010 Indoor
Track & Field Team.
The Track & Field Teams will now rest up, regroup, and refit
as it prepares for the outdoor season. The first meet of the
year will take place March 20th at the Husky Snowflake Invite
(Dedham, MA).
