NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Despite outscoring the Falcons in two quarters, Regis ultimately fell in a close 98-80 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) matchup against Albertus Magnus.
Regis came out strong, edging the Falcons 21-20 in a competitive first quarter. However, Albertus Magnus responded with a dominant 27-9 second quarter, surging ahead 47-30 at halftime.
The Pride opened the third quarter with a three-pointer from Erika Marinelli (Point Pleasant, N.J.) and continued to chip away at the deficit. Madi Zancan (Cumberland, R.I.) and Marinelli scored on back-to-back layups, followed by a three-pointer from Jordyn Striggles (Raynham, Mass.), cutting the Falcons' lead to nine. Regis kept the pressure on, scoring six points from free throws in the final 17 seconds of the quarter to stay within reach at 69-60.
Albertus Magnus opened the fourth with a 6-0 run, extending its lead to 79-60. Zancan answered with a layup, but the Falcons responded at the free-throw line to push their advantage to 18. Despite continued efforts, Regis was unable to complete the comeback, resulting in a 98-80 final.
Zancan led the Pride with 27 points and nine rebounds, while Courtney Doherty (Willimantic, Conn.) added 19 points and five rebounds.
Regis (5-17, 4-8 GNAC) will host Colby-Sawyer on Tuesday, February 18, at 5:00 p.m.
