WESTON, Mass. – The Regis College women's basketball team battled down to the wire but fell just short in a 65-64 loss to Elms College in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) matchup on February 13, 2025, at Higgins Court.
Elms jumped out to a 16-7 lead in the first quarter, but Regis responded with a 6-1 run to cut the deficit to four, trailing 18-14 after the opening period.
Four minutes into the second quarter, the Pride tied the game at 25, aided by key free throws from Emma Pollini (Derry, N.H.). However, a tip-in from Mary Turco put the Blazers back in front, and a late scoring push by the visitors sent Regis into halftime down 38-34.
Regis came out strong in the third quarter, opening with a 4-1 run to tie the game at 37. Elms answered with a 6-2 surge, extending its lead to 48-42. The Pride fought back, with a free throw from Erika Marinelli (Point Pleasant, N.J.) and a clutch three-pointer from Courtney Doherty (Willimantic, Conn.) bringing them within two at 48-46 heading into the final frame.
The fourth quarter remained a back-and-forth battle. Madi Zancan (Cumberland, R.I.) tied the game at 48 with a layup, but Elms quickly responded with a layup and two free throws to regain the lead. Regis continued to fight, pulling within one after another Zancan layup. With just over a minute left, Zancan struck again, giving the Pride a one-point advantage. However, timely free throws from the Blazers put them back on top, 63-62.
In the final moments, Zancan converted yet another layup to push Regis ahead by one with eight seconds remaining. But Elms had the last word, as Shea Barron sank two clutch free throws to seal the 65-64 victory.
Zancan led the Pride with a dominant performance, recording 24 points, 16 rebounds, and three blocks. Doherty added 14 points, four rebounds, and three assists.
Elms saw four players reach double figures, with Turco leading the way with 13 points and 18 rebounds.
