Williamstown, Mass. - Despite a career-high record from Courtney Doherty (Willimantic, Conn.) earning her 1,000th point, Regis College was unable to control the Williams College offensive attack, as the Ephs defeated the Pride, 85-60, Friday night in a non-conference women's collegiate basketball game at Chandler Gymnasium.
The Ephs broke ice with an early six points from Arianna Gerig and Skylar Chui. Regis responded with two layups to trail by two. After a three-pointer and jumper made by the Ephs, Doherty coined her 1,000th career point on a reverse layin bringing the deficit to a five-point margin. The Ephs offense piled on for the remainder of the first quarter, leading 24-12.
The Pride offense gained more opportunity in the second quarter as Erika Marinelli (Point Pleasant, N.J. ) started a scoring run for the Pride halfway through the quarter making her first three-pointer of the game followed by a layup and free throw from Madi Zancan (Cumberland, R.I.), and a jumper from Marinelli. The Ephs scored three consecutive points to close out the first half leading 37-25.
Williams extended its offensive output in the third quarter shooting 10-for-14, at 71.4 percent from the field, with Gerig collecting ten points for the Ephs. Despite shooting 50% three-pointers in the final quarter, Regis ultimately could not catchup to the Ephs, resulting in a 85-60 final.
Doherty led the Pride with 17 points, shooting 9-for-11 from the free throw line and 4-for-12 from the field. Jordyn Striggles (Raynham, Mass.) and Marinelli collected 11 points and one steal each.
Gerig finished with 19 points for Williams while Ellie Tounkara contributed 18 points.
