WORCESTER, Mass. - Regis College fell behind early and could not cut into Clark University's advantage until the final quarter as the Cougars defeated the Pride, 87-48, Saturday afternoon in a non-conference women's collegiate basketball game at Hurst Courts.
Courtney Doherty (Willimantic, Conn.) led all players with 21 points, plus she earned four rebounds, five assists, and two steals. However, no other Regis player reached double figures in scoring as the Pride struggled offensively.
Regis took a quick 5-2 lead on a three-pointer by Erika Marinelli (Point Pleasant, N.J.) before Clark took the lead for good by scoring the next eight points, half of them coming from Kailey Rios. After the Pride closed to within one point at 11-10 on a three-pointer by Bella George (Lynnfield, Mass.), the Cougars rattled off 14 straight points to close out the first quarter.
Rios hit a three-pointer to open the second quarter before Regis finally broke its scoring drought with a layup by Madi Zancan (Cumberland, R.I.) two minutes into the period. However, Clark extended its lead thanks to an 18-2 scoring run, taking a 46-14 advantage into the locker room at halftime.
After Clark (4-0) scored 27 points in the third quarter to further increase its lead, the Pride outscored the Cougars in the fourth quarter, 24-14. As a team, the Cougars shot 51.6 percent (33-for-64) from the field and 65.4 percent (17-for-26) from the free throw line, plus they won the rebounding battle, 52-32, including 14 offensive rebounds that led to 16 second chance points.
Alaina Schtzabel shot 8-for-11 from the field as she led the Cougars with 19 points, followed by Rios with 15 points, four rebounds, and four steals. Catherine Antwi came off the bench and contributed 12 points, five rebounds, four assists, and five steals.
Regis (0-3) hosts Salve Regina University Tuesday, Nov. 19, starting at 7 p.m. at Higgins Court.
