Women's Hoop Pulls Away with GNAC Win

WESTON, Mass. – Regis College defeats Johnson and Wales University 69-58, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) game on Higgins Court, Saturday Feb. 17, 2024.

The Pride shot out to a hot start with a layup from Haley Lightbody (Reading, Mass.), a three-point jump shot from Jordyn Striggles (Raynham, Mass.), followed by a jump shot and free throw from Madi Zancan (Cumberland, R.I.), to lead 8-0 at the beginning of the first quarter.

 Johnson and Wales put together a 3-0 scoring run to tie Regis, after two three-pointers and a layup from Sarah Wisniewski. The Pride responded with a three pointer from Courtney Doherty (Willimantic, Conn.) to clinch the lead for the remainder of the first quarter, leading at 20-17.

Regis kept the ball rolling in the second after a steal by Zancan created an opportunity for a jump shot to extend the Pride lead by five points. The Wildcats matched the Pride with 13 points for the second quarter with a layup from Naheema Walker, Mikayla Caruso, Peyton Oliver, and Alexa Lora to trail three points at the half.

The Pride started the third quarter with a 4-1 scoring run, just before a jump shot from Caruso closed the seven-point gap. The Wildcats collected their final points of the quarter with two free throws from Oliver.

Although the Wildcats outscored the Pride in the final ten minutes, with action from Autumn Ford, Wisniewski, Walker, and consecutive three-pointers from Jennell Martin, they could not make a comeback as the Pride finished on top with a 69-58 final.

Zancan led the Pride with 21 points, nine rebounds and four assists. Striggles collected 16 points with three rebounds and two assists, while Doherty earned 15 points and four rebounds.

Martin finished with 14 points for the Wildcats, with four three pointers, while Wisniewski earned 12 points with 11 rebounds.

Regis (10-15, 8-6) is scheduled to host Colby Sawyer on Monday, Feb. 19, 2024 at 1:00 p.m. in the first round of the 2024 GNAC Women's Basketball Tournament.
