Regis Drops to Lasell, 73-61

NEWTON, Mass. - Despite holding an early lead, Regis College was defeated by Lasell University, 73-61, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women's basketball game Saturday afternoon.

The Pride offense struck early against the Lasers with Madi Zancan (Cumberland, R.I.) making the first layup for the Pride just seconds after Brooke Damboise put Lasell on the board. Regis trailed behind Lasell at the end of the first quarter by one point, 14-13.

Erika Marinelli (Point Pleasant, N.J.) made the first three-point jump shot in the second quarter putting the Pride in the lead by two. The Lasers responded heavily with their offense scoring 24 points, including Shirle Major collecting eight for the quarter.

The Pride gained offensive momentum in the third quarter, matching the Lasers with 17 points. Regis' offense continued to apply pressure, but it wasn't enough as Lasell's Kiara Cerruti scored three three-pointers while earning 13 points for the fourth quarter.

Courtney Doherty (Willimantic, Conn.) led the Pride with 15 points, three rebounds, and three assists. Zancan finished with 14 points and 13 rebounds.

Major earned 22 points with three rebounds and three steals. Cerruti finished with 17 total points and eight rebounds, including six defensive rebounds, along with one steal and one block.

Regis (6-13, 4-4 GNAC) is set to host New England College on Tuesday, Jan. 30, at 7:00 p.m. Lasell University is scheduled to host Johnson and Wales University, Tuesday, Jan. 30, at 5:30 p.m.
