Women’s Hoop Cruises to Conference Victory

PAXTON, Mass. – Regis College continued its solid offensive play from the second half of Thursday's game, taking control early and cruising to a 77-50 victory over Anna Maria College Saturday afternoon in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women's basketball game at the Fuller Center.

Madi Zancan (Cumberland, R.I.) notched her seventh double-double of the season as she finished with 20 points, 11 rebounds, four assists, and four steals. Haley Lightbody (Reading, Mass.) earned her second double-double of the season, shooting 7-for-11 from the field to end up with 15 points along with a season-high 13 rebounds. Jordyn Striggles (Raynham, Mass.) collected 13 points and six rebounds, and Erika Marinelli (Point Pleasant, N.J.) contributed 10 points and four rebounds.

Madison Paulhus scored the first basket of the game for Anna Maria, but Regis quickly responded with an 11-1 scoring run, capped by a layup from Kailyn Smith (Chelmsford, Mass.). Anna Maria earned just two three-pointers from Gina Parmenter in the final four minutes of the first quarter as the Pride opened a 20-11 advantage after the initial 10 minutes of the contest.

In the second quarter, Regis extended its lead to 38-20 thanks to a 13-2 scoring run, led by Zancan with six points. The Pride rattled off eight straight points late in the third quarter to open a 27-point advantage, which would prove to be the final margin of victory.

Anna Maria (5-6, 1-2 GNAC) was led by Paulhus and Marinique Reddin with nine points apiece as well as Parmenter and Arianna Saladini with eight points each. As a team, the AMCATS shot just 30.2 percent (19-for-63) from the field and 36 percent (9-for-25) from the free throw line.

The Pride shot 40.5 percent (30-for-74) from the field and 59.1 percent (13-for-22) from the free throw line. Regis dominated the rebounding battle, 60-42, including 19 offensive boards that led to 20 second chance points, plus the Pride scored 27 points off 23 Anna Maria turnovers.

Regis (3-10, 2-1 GNAC) plays its final regular season non-conference game of the year, traveling to face Fitchburg State Wednesday, Jan. 10, starting at 5 p.m.
