Women's Basketball Wins Seventh Straight

WESTON, Mass. - Regis College extended its winning streak to seven games after defeating Anna Maria, 66-60, Thursday night in Great Northeast Athletic Conference women's basketball action at Higgins Court.

Four Pride players finished with double-digit scoring performances led by Pam Gonzalez (Revere, Mass.) with 16 points and nine rebounds while Madi Zancan (Cumberland, R.I.) added 11 points and eight rebounds. Olivia Pacheco (Waterford, Conn.) scored a double-double coming off the bench with 10 points and 11 rebounds while Jordyn Striggles (Raynham, Mass.) contributed 10 points and three steals. Valerie Whalen (Stoughton, Mass.) was one point off the double-double finishing with nine points and a game-high 14 rebounds.

Anna Maria scored first followed by consecutive two-point scores by Striggles and Whalen to put the Pride up early on in the first quarter. From there the teams went back and forth with another layup by Whalen giving Regis a three-point advantage (15-12) by the end of the first.

A three by Sophia Scarpa (Braintree, Mass.) gave Regis a four-point lead (20-16) early in the second but the AMCATS battled back, retaking a 29-28 lead off a layup by Megan Burdett with nearly three and a half minutes remaining in the quarter. Another three-pointer by Scarpa late in the half tied the score at 33 apiece heading into halftime.

Zancan completed a three-point play to get things started for the Pride in the third quarter while a three by Gonzalez put Regis up by three (41-38) halfway through the period. Another three by Striggles forced a timeout by the visitors and a jumper by Gonzalez closed out scoring in the third with the Pride holding on to a narrow 49-47 lead.

Baskets by Zancan and Pacheco early in the fourth gave the Pride a cushion as they managed to fend off the AMCATS with a layup by Pacheco and three straight free throws by Gonzalez sealing the deal for the Pride.

Marinique Reddin led Anna Maria with 22 points, 12 rebounds, and three steals while Gina Parmenter knocked down six threes to finish with 20 points.

Regis College (10-9, 10-3 GNAC) continues its stretch of home games on Saturday, February 4, hosting Colby-Sawyer at 1:00 p.m. while Anna Maria plays on the same day in a home matchup against Lasell beginning at 2:00 p.m.
