Women's Basketball Loses Season Opener

DARTMOUTH, Mass. - Regis College was defeated, 72-42, in the season opener against UMass Dartmouth Wednesday night in non-conference women's basketball action at Tripp Athletic Center.

The Pride got off to a strong start, winning the first quarter, 15-13, and holding on to a two-point lead through the second quarter to take control, 25-23, at halftime. Madi Zancan (Cumberland, R.I.) scored the first basket of the game on a fastbreak layup courtesy of a steal by Pam Gonzalez (Revere, Mass.). From there the two teams went back and forth with Regis holding a slight advantage at the end of the first half.

The Corsairs struck back in the second half, going on a 10-0 run to take an eight-point lead over Regis, capped off by a three-pointer by Shaelyn Carreiro. Zancan finally ended the run with a layup nearly four minutes into the third quarter but UMass Dartmouth kept the pressure on the Pride, outscoring the visitors 49-17 in the second half.

Zancan led Regis with 13 points while grabbing eight rebounds. Valerie Whalen (Stoughton, Mass.) added seven points and eight rebounds coming off the bench while Gonzalez made six steals and had 10 defensive rebounds.

Jordan Moretti paved the way for UMass Dartmouth, finishing with a game-high 21 points, assisted in the effort by Carreiro who finished with 11 points, and Teja Andrews with 10.

Regis College (0-1) will host Bridgewater State in its home opener on Saturday, Nov. 12, beginning at 1:00 p.m. before hitting the road on Wednesday, Nov. 16, to take on Wheaton College, tip-off at 7:00 p.m.
