Pride Women's Hoop Earns Key GNAC Road Win

FRANKLIN, Mass. - Regis College was able to fend off Dean College, as the Pride defeated the Bulldogs, 47-35, Saturday afternoon in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference women's basketball game at Pieri Gymnasium.

Pam Gonzalez (Revere, Mass.) led the Pride in scoring with 18 points, six rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Valerie Whalen (Stoughton, Mass.) grabbed a team-high 17 rebounds while adding nine points, five steals, and two blocks. Olivia Pacheco (Waterford, Conn.) chipped in with seven points and two blocked shots.

After a slow first quarter where the Pride held a comfortable 12-5 lead, the Bulldogs bounced back in the second period, going on a 13-3 run to take an 18-15 lead with 4:25 remaining in the first half. A three-pointer from Katie Hart (Shirley, Mass.) evened up the score at 18-18 and opened the floodgates for the Pride, as they went on a 12-1 run to finish the half ahead, 27-19.

The third quarter started off in a similar way to the second period with the Bulldogs going on an 8-0 run to tie the game at 27-27 with a little over five minutes remaining in the period. After a layup by Whalen put Regis back on top, the Pride would go on to extend their advantage throughout the rest of the game, clinching their fifth victory within the last six games.

For Dean, Alexah Potter paved the way with 14 points and a team-high 15 rebounds to secure the double-double. Tori Viau added nine points coming off the bench. 

The Pride were able to force 25 turnovers which led to 24 points. They also edged out the Bulldogs on the glass, grabbing 41 rebounds compared to Dean's 39, including 19 offensive rebounds resulting in 22 second chance points for Regis.

Regis College (8-7, 7-2 GNAC) next hosts Johnson & Wales Monday, Feb. 7, with the tip-off scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
