Women’s Hoop Loses Non-Conference Tilt at WPI

WORCESTER, Mass. – Regis College lost to WPI, 73-42, Saturday afternoon in a non-conference women's collegiate basketball game at Harrington Auditorium.

Pam Gonzalez (Revere, Mass.) led the Pride with her eighth career double-double, finishing with 18 points and 13 rebounds. She shot 7-of-13 from inside the three-point arc. Kristin Barrett (Plymouth, Mass.) contributed five points and four assists off the bench, while Shannon Kelley (Quincy, Mass.) and Erica Regan (Sterling, Mass.) also scored five points apiece.

Both teams got off to a slow start, as the score was tied 4-4 midway through the first quarter until Melanie Presseau started an 8-0 WPI scoring run with a three-pointer. In the final seconds of the period, Olivia Pacheco (Waterford, Conn.) made a layup to bring the Pride within two at 15-13, but Adrianna Niles hit a three-pointer to extend WPI's lead to five at the end of the quarter.

The Engineers scored the first eight points of the second quarter to increase their advantage to 26-13, with the two teams basically exchanging baskets the rest of the first half. WPI took control in the third quarter, outscoring Regis 16-4 over the final five minutes of the period as the home team went on to pick up its fifth straight victory to open the 2021-22 season.

In just 15 minutes off the bench, Emily Raynowska led the Engineers with 13 points, seven rebounds, and five assists. Presseau finished with 12 points and five steals, while Lisa Cristiano and Kara ONeil contributed 10 points apiece. As a team, WPI shot 48.4 percent (31-of-64) from the field, committed just eight turnovers, and won the rebounding battle, 43-23, including 12 offensive rebounds that led to 13 second chance points.

The Pride shot 30.8 percent (16-of-52) from the field and 61.5 percent (8-of-13) from the free throw line. Regis committed a season-low 12 turnovers during the contest.

Regis (0-3) bookends the Thanksgiving holiday with two home games, first welcoming Eastern Nazarene to Higgins Court Tuesday, Nov. 23, for a 6 p.m. tipoff. The Pride then face University of New England Sunday, Nov. 28, beginning at 12 p.m.
