Providence, R.I. – The Regis College women's basketball team picked up their first Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) victory of the season on the road Wednesday against Johnson & Wales, 64-37.
Pam Gonzalez (Revere, Mass.) scored 20 points and brought down nine boards, while Katryna Veasey (Quincy, Mass.) and Taylor Iorfino (Monroe, Conn.) both scored 12 points for the Pride in the victory.
Both teams struggled early in the contest with neither team scoring until 4:06 into the contest when Gonzalez converted a three-point jumper. With the score 6-5 in favor of the Wildcats with 3:53 remaining in the first quarter, Veasey hit a jumper that started a run of six consecutive points for Regis, who closed out the quarter holding an 11-6 lead.
After Johnson & Wales' Maddy Moro scored the first five points of the second quarter to bring the game within two, Regis rattled off the next eight points, extending the lead to double digits after a Nikki Bitinaitis (Cromwell, Conn.) three-pointer. Johnson & Wales outscored Regis 7-4 in the final 5:11 to cut the Pride lead to 25-18.
Arie Searcy (Santa Rosa, Calif.) and Veasey scored on back-to-back possessions to kick things off for the Pride in the second half. With 4:15 remaining in the third quarter, a Gonzalez layup started a 10-2 run that put Regis up 43-28. The Pride held a 46-32 lead going into the fourth and outscored the Wildcats 18-5 in the final frame to secure the victory.
Regis (7-8, 1-1 GNAC) will play Saturday, Jan. 18, on the road against Rivier at 1 p.m. On Wednesday, Jan. 22, they will travel back to Providence for a non-conference matchup against Rhode Island College before taking on Emmanuel Saturday, Jan. 25, in a GNAC contest at Higgins Court.
