Women’s Basketball Drops Non-Conference Contest to Rams

WESTON, Mass. – The Regis College women's basketball team was able to bring a double-digit first quarter deficit down to two, but Framingham State pulled away for an 82-53 victory at Higgins Court.

The Rams' Emily Velozo lead both teams in scoring with 29 points going 11-of-16 from the field. Pam Gonzalez (Revere, Mass.) led the Pride with a career-high 20 points, while freshman Mackenzie Emery (Standish, Maine) assisted on 10 baskets in the loss.

With the Pride trailing 4-3 2:04 into the first quarter, Framingham State scored on three consecutive trips to increase their lead to seven. With the Pride trailing by 11, Katryna Veasey (Quincy, Mass.) sparked a Pride run, scoring six of the next eight points to shrink the deficit to five. The Rams held a 22-15 lead at the end of the first quarter after a pair of free throws from Mary Kate O'Day.

The Pride continued to shrink the deficit at the start of the second half. After Velozo hit a three-pointer, the Pride's Gonzalez got on the scoreboard with a layup, followed with a three-pointer of her own, cutting the lead down to three.

With the score 27-25 in favor of the Rams, Camille Desrochers hit a three-pointer, sparking eight consecutive points for the Rams to bring the lead back to double digits. At the end of the first half the Rams held a 38-31 lead.

The Rams and Pride traded baskets at the start of the third quarter, until Velozo kicked off a 9-0 run to bring the Rams' lead to 15. Framingham State ended the quarter leading Regis 61-48. In the final frame the Rams outscored the Pride 21-7 to close out the victory.

The Rams hit 54.9 percent from the floor in the contest. Framingham State also hit 82.6 percent of their trips to the line, while the Pride made 80 percent from the stripe.

Framingham State (6-1) will play Suffolk on Saturday, Dec. 7. They will then face MIT on the road Tuesday, Dec. 10.

Regis (5-5) takes on Eastern Nazarene Saturday, Dec. 7 in a 1 p.m. matchup. The Pride will then be off until the New Year when they face Becker Thursday, Jan. 2 at 12 p.m.
