History Made as Women's Hoops Defeats Mount Ida

WESTON, Mass. - Senior Brittany Stone (West Bridgewater, Mass.) became the Regis (Mass.) women's basketball all-time leading scorer with a second quarter lay-in as the Pride defeated Mount Ida 71-48 in Great Northeast Athletic Conference action at Higgins Court on Saturday afternoon.

With the win, the Pride improves to 12-7 on the season and 10-1 in the GNAC. The Mustangs drop to 11-7 with the loss and 4-5 in conference play.

Stone's milestone basket came on the same day that the Regis Athletic Department honored head coach Angela Santa Fe for her 100th career win, which came last Saturday, and 2017 graduate Amanda Hawkesworth for her 1,402 career points in a Pride uniform.

The Pride struggled in the first quarter in part due to seven team turnovers and trailed at the end of the period by a score of 18-15. Mount Ida senior Breanna Muir (Wareham, Mass.) opened the second quarter with a triple to give the Mustangs their largest lead of the afternoon at six points, but Stone's historic bucket changed the momentum in the Pride's favor. Regis outscored Mount Ida 18-10 in the quarter and took a 33-28 lead into the half.

The lead was short-lived for the Pride, as Mustang sophomore Valerie Martin (Derry, N.H.) hit back-to-back triples to open the third quarter and give her team a 34-33 lead. The score remained tight for the first five minutes of the quarter, but the Pride pulled away thanks to a 12-0 run to close the quarter and take a 54-44 lead. Mount Ida failed to score after the 5:13 mark of the period.

The Pride continued to play dominating defense in the fourth quarter to close out the victory. Stone scored 10 points and grabbed eight rebounds in the quarter alone as Regis outscored the Mustangs 17-4 in the game's closing period. Mount Ida went just 1-for-17 from the floor in the quarter, the lone bucket coming on an Alisa Benson (Middletown, R.I.) lay-in with 7:37 showing on the clock.

Stone led all players with 27 points and 16 rebounds on the afternoon, with classmate Shannon Hayes (Billerica, Mass.) chipping in 18 points of her own. Martin picked up a double-double of her own for Mount Ida with 18 points and 10 rebounds, leading her team in both categories.

Next up for the Mustangs, they will take on Johnson & Wales on Tuesday in Providence. The Pride returns to action on Wednesday with a huge matchup against Saint Joseph's (Me.) with first place in the conference on the line.
