Women's Basketball Falls To Brandeis In New Year Opener

WESTON, Mass. – A win to open the new year wouldn't be in the cards for the Regis (Mass.) women's basketball team on Tuesday who fell to Brandeis 60-50 in non-conference action at Higgins Court. Regis falls to 4-5 with the Judges improving to 8-2.

Sam D'Angelo (Woburn, Mass.) and Maura Russell (Braintree, Mass.) both put up a team-high 12 points with Brittany Stone (West Bridgewater, Mass.) posting nine points and grabbing eight rebounds. Hannah Nicholson (Sunderland, Vt.) was one rebound shy of a double double with her 12-point, 9-rebound effort for Brandeis in a game where neither team found its offensive groove.

The Pride opened the game cold from the floor and didn't get on the board until Stone's layup with 6:19 to play in the first period. Meanwhile, the Judges were dialing from long distance as three straight three pointers, the last from Camila Casanueva (Santa Barbara, Calif.), helped build an early 11-2 lead.

Regis battled back to make a game of it by halftime. Back-to-back three pointers from Russell and D'Angelo shaved the lead to two points by the end of the first quarter and stingy defense kept the Brandeis lead to just six points at halftime.

The game would open up a bit after the break but not to the liking of the Pride as Brandeis reeled off 11 straight points to take a 39-26 lead with 4:05 to play in the third quarter. Regis endured a near-four minute scoring drought but managed to hang around when Russell's three pointer shaved the lead to eight points by the end of the period.

The beginning of the fourth however saw early buckets from Katie Goncalo (Fall River, Mass.) and Eva Hart (Manasquan, N.J.) to extend the lead to 14 points.

Regis returns to action Thursday at UMass-Dartmouth for a 6:00 p.m. tipoff while the Judges open conference play Saturday at NYU with a 1:00 p.m. tip.
