DARTMOUTH, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth Corsairs snapped the Regis College women's basketball team nine game winning streak with a double-digit, 67-51 victory over the Pride on Tuesday evening in non-conference basketball action. With the loss, Regis falls to 16-3 on the season and the victory moves the Corsairs to 14-6.
Megan Ronaghan (North Attleboro, Mass.) led the way, registering 20 points and 16 boards to lead all players on the contest. Sophomore Alicia Kutil (Franklin, Mass.) and senior Colleen Kane (Arlington, Mass.) also reached double figures, with Kutil dropping 14 points and Kane 12 to couple with eight rebounds.
The Corsairs dominated the boards all evening, out-rebounding Regis by a 47-36 margin, and also finished the job at the free throw line, going 15-22 (68 percent) to the Pride's 6-12 (50 percent) effort.
Sophomore Brittany Stone (West Bridgewater, Mass.) turned in 16 points and eight rebounds to pace Regis, with junior Amanda Hawkesworth (Abington, Mass.) contributing 12 points, six boards and four assists.
UMass Dartmouth seized control immediately to begin the game. Despite giving up the first basket to Stone, a Kutil 3-pointer opened a 21-2 run over the next seven minutes. The Corsairs dominated the paint during the stretch, converting 14 points on the blocks. Ronaghan hit 11 points in the first quarter alone, as the Corsairs finished the first ten minutes with a 24-7 lead.
Regis regained composure in the second quarter, bouncing back to outscore UMass Dartmouth 11-10 in the stanza. Seven combined points from Hawkesworth and Stone along with seven points off Corsair turnovers helped the visitors to maintain a 16-point deficit at half.
Ronaghan recorded a double-double in the first half, posting 12 points while pounding the boards with 12 rebounds. The Corsairs shot 14-32 (43 percent) in the opening 20 minutes to Regis' 7-35 (20 percent).
The second half was a more evenly-played affair. Baskets were traded throughout the third quarter, with Stone helping Regis to 10 points in the paint. The Pride rebounded in a big way in the final stanza, going on a 15-5 run in the first eight minutes. A Maura Russell (Braintree, Mass.) 3-pointer cut the lead to 15, but UMass Dartmouth's advantage was too much to overcome.
Russell finished with nine points, all from behind the arc, with UMass Dartmouth's Chelsea Houlihan (Wolcott, Conn.) and Kane each contributing four assists to lead the Corsairs.
Both teams return to league play on Saturday. UMass Dartmouth will host Western Connecticut in pursuit of a season split with the Colonials at 1 p.m., while Regis meets Bath Path at 6 p.m.
