STONE'S FOURTH DOUBLE-DOUBLE LEADS PRIDE TO FIFTH STRAIGHT WIN

BOSTON – The Regis College women's basketball team earned their fifth straight victory in exciting fashion defeating Wheelock College 55-54 in New England Collegiate Conference action at Winsor Court. With the win, the Pride improve to 5-1 (2-0 NECC), while Wheelock slips to 2-2 overall (1-1 NECC).

Regis jumped out to an early 10-3 lead, but Michelle Woods (Wilmington, Mass.) and Kayla Corshia (Medway, Mass.) combined to make up the difference and enter with their team into the second quarter up 11-10.

The Wildcats fell into a slight, 20-14 hole with 5:04 to go in the second quarter, but were able to make a comeback yet again and exit the half with a 22-20 advantage. Coming off that 8-0 run, Brianna Hochwarter (Attleboro, Mass.) would strike for an immediate second-half 3-pointer, giving Wheelock a 25-20 lead off of 11 straight Wildcats' points.

Over the next 7:43 though, Amanda Hawkesworth (Abington, Mass.) and Brittany Stone (West Bridgewater, Mass.) would combine for 18 of Regis' next 20 points in an offensive explosion that put the Pride back in the lead, 40-33 with 2:05 to go in the third.

Regis was able to maintain their 7-point cushion through the first 5:51 in the fourth quarter. However, a late, 9-1 run that included 8 straight Hochwarter points and a Jaime Grzych (Columbia, Conn.) free throw put the Wildcats back on top, 54-53 with 7 seconds to go. At that point, things looked good for Wheelock; but a blocking foul with 4 seconds to go would award the Pride the pair of free throws that would ultimately put the game away, 55-54.

Stone led all players with a 17-point, 13-rebound double-double, her fourth of the season, to go along with a block and 2 assists. Hochwarter led the pack for Wheelock, recording 15 points, 6 rebounds, a pair of assists and a pair of steals. Grzych and Woods each chipped in with 12 points, while sophomore forward Gabrielle Haywood (East Longmeadow, Mass.) collected a nice 11 boards.

Wheelock returns to action on December 8 when they travel to Fisher College for a 7:00 p.m. nonconference contest. Regis resumes play on December 5, when they host Daniel Webster at 1:00 p.m.
