NO. 7 REGIS COLLEGE EARNS BID TO ECAC QUARTERFINAL VERSUS NO. 2 SOUTHERN MAINE

WESTON, Mass.—The Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) announced Monday that No. 7 Regis College will travel to No. 2 Southern Maine as part of the ECAC quarterfinal. This will be Regis’ second consecutive appearance in the ECAC chase for the championship.

In the 2009-10 season Regis College defeated Worcester State 63-53 in the ECAC quarterfinal at home, before traveling to Keene State in the semifinal game versus Plymouth State.

Southern Maine (16-10, 11-3 LEC) is coming off back-to-back losses to Eastern Connecticut. It lost its first game 60-53 in overtime, before hosting Eastern in the LEC playoff game, that it lost 78-64. Nicole Garland posted a team-high 22 points in the conference quarterfinal.

Courtney Cochran is the team’s leader with an average of 15.0 points per game, and is grabbing 11.0 rebounds per game. Teammates Kaylie DeMillo and Renee Nicholas contribute 9.7 and 8.8 points per game, respectively.

Cochran has been snagged the team-high in rebounds 23-of-26 games. She collected 16 rebounds twice, and had a seasons best 25 point 13 rebound performance in Southern Maine’s loss to Eastern.

Southern Maine is a tough team at home having loss just one game (12-1) on the season. Its only home loss was to the University of New England in the first game of the year.

Comparatively, Regis College has won 11 games on the road. Regis College will enter Wednesday’s game having had its last contest on Feb. 24 against Salve Regina in The Commonwealth Coast Conference semifinals.

The Pride dropped a 56-42 decision to the Seahawks in which Stephanie Crawford and Claire Ramonas tallied double figures. Crawford managed 16 points on 3-of-11 from the field, and 9-for-12 at the free-throw line. Crawford also grabbed 10 rebounds in the double-double performance.

Ramonas had 10 points on 4-for-9 shooting from the field, and shot 50 percent at the charity stripe. Although Regis College held a substantial 52-41 advantage in rebounds, Salve forced 22 Regis College turnovers.

Southern Maine averages 38 rebounds per game as a team, while Regis College snags slightly better than 41 rebounds per game.

Last season, Regis College reached the TCCC finals, but lost to the University of New England. The following week it received its bid for the ECAC Tournament where it defeated Worcester State at home, before falling to the Panthers of Plymouth State.
