O'Neal competed in cross country, indoor and outdoor track & field, and soccer at the Hartford Magnet Trinity College Academy in Hartford, Conn. 

Personal:
O'Neal's parents are Darlene and Ardell O'Neal. He has a brother named Ben also on the Regis College cross country and track & field teams, plus he has two other brothers named Austin and Wayne. Jacob, Ben, and Austin (competing for Husson) are triplets. He is majoring in education.
