NEWTON, Mass. – Regis College men's volleyball traveled to crosstown rival Lasell University tonight for a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) bout. The Lasers secured a three-set sweep over the Pride, dropping Regis to 14-9 on the season and 2-5 in GNAC play.
Brandon Valdes (Miami, Fla.) and Jalen Watt (South Hadley, Mass.) led the Pride with seven and six kills, respectively, while Tyrell Bucasas (Waialua, Hawaii) recorded 20 assists in the effort. Defensively, Jay Bodhidatta (Bangkok, Thailand) added 10 digs, and John Nangle (Lowell, Mass.) contributed five blocks on the night.
For the Lasers, Theo Zaharewicz and Teddy Teraszkiewicz registered 14 and 10 kills, respectively, while Trystan Maloney tallied 21 assists, three digs, and three blocks in the victory.
How it Happened:
- The Pride rallied with four unanswered points to close a nine-point gap midway through the first set, narrowing the score to 18-13 in favor of the home team. However, they would score only five more points, three of which came from Watt, as the Lasers won the set 25-18.
- A kill by Watt off an assist from Bucasas gave the Pride an early 4-3 lead, but the Lasers responded with four unanswered points to reclaim the advantage. The Lasers maintained control for the rest of the set, leading by as many as 11 points before winning set two, 25-15.
- The Pride refused to back down in set three, tying the game at 14 and 15. Then, behind a pair of Adam Bonica (Quincy, Mass.) kills, they went on a 5-0 run to tie the set at 23 before a Bonica kill and ace gave the Pride a 25-24 lead, forcing Lasell to call a timeout. From there, the set saw six ties and five lead changes before a Zaharewicz kill sealed the set and match victory for the Lasers.
Inside the Numbers:
- Adam Bonica played a key role in the Pride's third-set rally, recording all five of his kills in that set.
- John Nangle matched his season-high with five blocks in tonight's effort.
