PURCHASE, N.Y. - Regis College's men's volleyball team secured a hard-fought victory against Manhattanville, overcoming the Valiants in a four-set battle at Kennedy Gymnasium in a non-conference tri--match on February 15. The Pride executed a 3-1 win with set scores of 25-18, 25-20, 25-27, and 30-28, before dropping to Hobart 3-0.
Regis 3, Manhattanville 1:
Regis and Manhattanville traded points early until a kill by John Nangle (Lowell, Mass.) sparked an 8-3 run, putting the Pride ahead 11-7. Additional kills from Jalen Watt (South Hadley, Mass.) and Eddie Djatcha (Lowell, Mass.) helped extend the lead as Regis closed out the first set, 25-18.
The Valiants struggled early in the second set but capitalized on a Regis attack error to tie the score at 16. Both teams battled before Regis pulled away with four straight points to lead 23-18. A service error and another Nangle kill sealed the set for the Pride, 25-20.
Manhattanville opened the third set with a 4-1 run, but Regis quickly responded, taking a 10-6 lead. The Valiants fought back to tie the set at 18, and despite Regis reaching set point at 24-20, Manhattanville surged ahead with five consecutive points. A service error allowed Regis to tie it at 25, but the Valiants secured the set, 27-25.
The fourth set was another tight battle, with Regis leading 23-18 before Manhattanville capitalized on Pride errors to even the score at 23. The teams traded points beyond 25, but a kill from Brandon Valdes (Miami, Fla.) and a Valiant attack error clinched the set—and the match—for Regis, 30-28.
Valdes and Bonica collected 13 kills apiece, while Nangle contributed nine kills. Bucasas led with 37 assists and 13 digs.
Hobart 3, Regis 0:
Regis opened the match with a 4-1 lead, but Hobart responded with a 9-2 run to go up 10-6. The Pride closed the gap to 13-11, but an 8-3 surge by the Statesmen extended their lead to 21-14. Hobart secured the final four points, capitalizing on a kill and three Regis errors to take the first set, 25-18.
The Pride fought to regain momentum in the second set, recording a match-high seven kills (.130). However, Hobart's balanced attack, with six different players tallying at least two kills, proved too much. The Statesmen claimed a 25-19 win to extend their lead to 2-0.
Regis struggled in the third set, committing six hitting errors while managing just five kills (-.059) in a must-win scenario. Meanwhile, Hobart remained efficient, registering 13 kills with an impressive .556 hitting percentage to complete the sweep with a dominant 25-14 victory.
Watt led the Pride with seven kills and four digs, while Jay Bodhidatta (Bangkok, Thailand.) earned five digs and two assists.
Regis (9-5, 1-2 GNAC) is scheduled to travel to face Pratt on Sunday, February 16, at 12:00 .m.
