Women’s Lacrosse Loses at Mass Maritime

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. - Regis College could not hold onto an early lead, as the Massachusetts Maritime Academy used two significant scoring runs to pull away with a 16-6 victory Wednesday night in a non-conference women's lacrosse match at Clean Harbors Stadium.

Hope Alto (Boston, Mass.) grabbed the opening draw control and, after an exchange of turnovers, found Madeline Conover (West Newbury, Mass.) for the first goal of the match. However, after seven minutes of back and forth play, Mass Maritime began a stretch of four straight goals when Cassie Llewellyn found the back of the net.

Sarah Naar scored twice in the span of 1:33, and then Llewellyn picked up her second goal of the night to extend the Buccaneer lead to 4-1. Audrey Mason collected the draw control that started the second quarter, with Molly Higgins (Weymouth, Mass.) eventually gaining control and finding Alto for her first goal of the match to bring Regis back within two goals.

Just 36 seconds after a goal by Lindsy Durgin, Higgins earned her first career collegiate goal to close the Pride deficit to 5-3, but the Buccaneers pulled away with seven unanswered goals to finish the first half, led by Llewellyn with three goals and one assist during that span as well as Naar with two goals.

Durgin completed her hat trick 1:25 into the third quarter to give Mass Maritime a 13-3 advantage, but Regis kept battling as Alto earned her second tally of the night midway through the period. However, goals by Allie Dickinson and Durgin late in the third quarter and from Naar 39 seconds into the fourth quarter increased the home team's advantage to 16-4 before Alto scored two more goals in the period to complete the scoring.

Alto led the Pride with four goals, one assist, and 12 draw controls, while Retta Hatin (Hooksett, N.H.) paced the team with five groundballs. Daniela Mazo (Bridgeport, Conn.) started in net and made three saves in the first half before Allayna Martone (Elkridge, Md.) took over for the second half.

Mass Maritime (1-0) was led by Llewellyn and Naar with five goals apiece, with Llewellyn also earning two assists, nine groundballs, four draw controls, and four caused turnovers. Madison Selby played the entire match in net for the Buccaneers and was credited with seven saves as she earned the victory.

Regis College (1-1) will take some time off for Spring Break before resuming competition Saturday, March 9, at UMass Dartmouth starting at 12 p.m.
