Regis Men’s Volleyball Falls at Rivier

NASHUA, N.H. – Regis College lost to Rivier University, 3-0 (25-18, 25-15, 25-16), Wednesday night in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference men's volleyball match at Muldoon Gymnasium.

Regis took the early lead in the first set thanks to two block assists by Kostea Andreenko (Marstons Mills, Mass.) and a service ace by Fernando Gomez (San Juan, Puerto Rico). However, Rivier went on a 9-1 scoring run to pull ahead, 12-5. After a kill by Shawn Gamble (Cranston, R.I.) closed the Pride deficit to 14-10, the Raiders scored four straight points to double their advantage, and then they eventually clinched the set on a service ace by Pedro Campos.

A kill by Inelson Alves (Brockton, Mass.) tied the second set at 4-4, but the Raiders took control thanks to a 7-1 scoring run, led by Dashaun Graham with two kills and one block. Rivier closed out the second set with a 5-1 run down the stretch, featuring two kills by John Equitani.

The Pride stayed close early in the third set, with a kill by Jayson Vega (Ponce, Puerto Rico) closing the Regis deficit to one at 6-5, but once again Rivier pulled away with a scoring run, this time outscoring Regis 10-4. Once again, a 5-1 Raider scoring run closed out the set, with kills by Sokunbuth Ly and David Smith finishing off the set and the match.

Andreenko led the Pride at the net with four kills and three total blocks, while Vega dished out 13 assists to go along with three kills on four attack attempts. Defensively, Zabdiel Frias (Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico) paced the backline with seven digs, followed by Alves with five digs.

Rivier (7-4, 2-0 GNAC) was led by Smith with 10 kills, a .533 hitting percentage, and four digs, while Graham contributed four kills, four digs, and four total blocks. Campos accumulated 25 assists, and Cam Roth led the Raider defense with nine digs.

Regis (5-6, 0-2 GNAC) continues this stretch of three straight league road matches at Emerson Friday, Feb. 22, starting at 7 p.m.
