BOSTON, Mass. – Regis College was unable to control the offensive attack of Wentworth, ranked ninth in the country, as the Leopards defeated the Pride, 3-0 (25-16, 25-21, 25-15), Wednesday night in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) men's collegiate volleyball match at Nelson Recreation Center.
The Leopards started the first set with a 4-2 lead thanks to two aces by Alem Dubcak, just before the Pride eventually came back to take 6-5 and 7-6 edges. Two kills by Andrew Ahn pushed Wentworth to a 12-8 lead before four straight points later on extended the margin to 16-9. After Regis closed the gap at 18-13, Wentworth sprouted a 4-0 run, pushing the lead to 22-13, before the Leopards closed out with a 25-16 final in the first set.
Regis grabbed hold of a 4-2 lead in the second set,however finishes by Ahn and Conner Foxwell helped Wentworth come back at 5-4 before later rattling off a 7-1 run to take a 13-6 lead. Two kills by Foxwell continued the lead to 19-11 before the Pride came back with a 9-3 run to close the deficit at 22-20. However, consecutive kills by the Leopards claim a 25-21 set win.
Wentworth reeled out to a 5-2 lead in the third set before continuing with a 9-6 lead. The Leopards continued its advantage to 12-6, before a 7-1 run would extend its lead with 10, at 20-10. The Black and Gold extended its offensive to clinch the third set victory at 25-15.
Brandon Valdes (Miami, Fla.) led the Pride with seven kills, followed by Adam Bonica (Quincy, Mass.), Jalen Watt (South Hadley, Mass.), and John Nangle (Lowell, Mass.) to split four kills apiece. Tyrell Bucasas (Waialua, Hawaii.) finished with 18 assists.
Regis (7-4, 1-2 GNAC) will travel to face Sarah Lawerence on Friday, February 14, at 7:00 p.m.
