WESTON, Mass. – The Regis College received a team effort in sweeping Newbury College, 3-0 (25-18, 25-14, 25-14), Wednesday evening in a non-conference men's collegiate volleyball match at Higgins Court.
Kostea Andreenko (Marstons Mills, Mass.) led the Pride at the net, collecting 10 kills on 16 attack attempts without an error for a .625 hitting percentage to go along with five total blocks. Each Pride setter played one set, with Sebastian Valdes (Diamond Bar, Calif.) earning 16 assists, Brendan Lam (Rockville, Md.) going a perfect 4-for-4 in attack attempts to accompany five assists and three digs, and Jayson Vega (Ponce, Puerto Rico) closing out the match with 11 assists in the third set.
The teams split the first 18 points of the match, with Newbury taking a 10-9 lead on a kill by Alvin Fernandes. Regis would take control by scoring seven unanswered points, led by three kills from Andreenko, and then the Pride would clinch the opening set on a Newbury service error and another kill by Andreenko.
Andreenko led Regis to a 9-3 advantage in the second set with three blocks, two kills, an assist, and a service ace. The two squads basically traded points through most of the set until the Pride won the final five points, led by three service aces from Drew Beimel (Redondo Beach, Calif.).
The Pride opened a 14-4 lead in the third set thanks in part to three kills by Matt Ferrara (Haverhill, Mass.) as well as two kills and a service ace from Fernando Gomez (San Juan, Puerto Rico). Ferrara and Gomez each earned one more kill to account for Regis's final two points of the match.
Newbury (2-7) was led by Rory Dobbins with eight kills and two solo blocks, while Fernandes finished with six kills and a .364 hitting percentage. Pedro Juan De Jesus collected 11 assists, four kills, four digs, and two total blocks, and Jeremias Soto led the Nighthawks with seven digs to go along with six assists.
Regis (4-4) will play its next six matches away from home, starting Friday, Feb. 15, against nationally ranked Endicott at 6 p.m. The Pride do not play at Higgins Court again until a GNAC tri-match Saturday, March 16, against Lasell and Emmanuel.
