ELMS DOWNS PRIDE IN THREE SETS

WESTON, Mass. – Behind 10 kills from Jeff Vautrin (Chicopee, Mass.), Elms College defeated Regis College, 3-0, by set scores of 25-15, 25-13, 25-8 Monday night in New England Collegiate Conference men's volleyball action. The Pride fall to 1-10 overall and 1-6 in the NECC, while Elms moves its record to .500 at 12-12 overall and 5-4 in league games.

Dave Amicangioli's (Belmont, Mass.) second kill of the game made it an 11-6 deficit for the Pride early in the first set. An Amicangioli service ace later in the game made it a 16-10 game before Elms pushed its lead in excess of 10 points and scored nine of the final 14 points to take game one, 25-15.

The Blazers used another fast start in the second set as an Aleksandr Kuzmenko (Chicopee, Mass.) kill on a feed from Kevin Welsh (Wilbraham, Mass.) gave Elms a 9-3 lead. Kuzmenko then served on four-straight points for the visitors, including a service ace and a kill by Kordel Latimer (Lynn, Mass.), to force a Pride timeout with the score 13-9. Claude Jean (Rindge, N.H.) picked up a kill out of the timeout, but too many errors down the stretch by Regis allowed Elms to grab a 2-0 advantage in the match with a 25-13 win.

In the third and final set, three-straight attack errors by the Pride forced another Regis timeout with the score 12-4 in favor of Elms. Dave Amicangioli's second service ace of the day made it a 20-7 game, but it was too little too late as Elms took the final set, 25-8.

Regis was led by a team-high seven kills on the night from Dan Berdichevsky (Wayland, Mass.). Joe Coye (Plaistow, N.H.) added four kills, while Claude Jean had three kills of his own. Angel Aguilar (Silver Springs, Md.) handed out 14 assists and added three digs, with Amicangioli and Chris Tran (Quincy, Mass.) also recording three digs each.

Vautrin led the Blazers with 10 kills on the night and swung an efficient .471. Bryon Rainey (Brookline, Mass.) had six kills while Daniel Lebron (San Juan, Puerto Rico) and Kordel Latimer each had four kills apiece. Kevin Welsh handed out a match-high 21 assists and Roger Conklin (Chicopee, Mass.) led the Blazers with five kills on the night.

The Crimson and Gold return to action on Tuesday night as they host Lesley University in a 7:00 p.m. NECC contest. Elms looks for its fourth-straight win on Wednesday night when the Blazers host Newbury College in a 7:00 p.m. league match.
