NIGHTHAWKS SOAR PAST PRIDE, 3-0

WESTON, Mass. – Behind Chin Yin Li's (Framingham, Mass.) 10 kills, three digs, two service aces, and one block, Newbury College defeated Regis College, 3-0 (25-8, 25-11, 25-14) on Friday evening in New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) men's volleyball action. The Nighthawks improve to 7-10 on the season (4-4 NECC) with the win.

The Pride, who fall to 1-9 overall and 1-5 in NECC play, were paced by freshman Joe Coye's (Plaistow, N.H.) four kills, four digs, and four blocks.

After a kill by Coye tied the game early at 1-1 in the first set, Newbury went on a 14-2 run and jumped to a 15-3 lead. Evan Stone (Stockton, Calif.) registered a kill to bring the host squad within eleven points, but the Nighthawks responded with a quick 6-0 run to bring the score to 21-4. Despite two more kills from Coye and one from Dan Berdichevsky (Wayland, Mass.), Newbury closed out the set by virtue of a 25-8 score.

The second set was much of the same story, as Newbury built an early lead and the Pride were unable to really claw their way back into it. Back-to-back errors by the visitors made the score 11-5, but an 11-3 run would extend their lead to 22-8. Li would record two kills during that stretch, while Tyler Sayne (Tucson, Ariz.) also added two of his seven kills on the night for Newbury over that run. Regis would get a kill from Dave Amicangioli (Belmont, Mass.), who finished with nine digs on the night, and the Pride got two more errors in their favor, but Newbury closed out set two, 25-11.

The third and final set proved to be the closest of the night, but Li and sophomore outside hitter Jake Powell (Salinas, Calif.) combined for 11 kills to lead the Nighthawks to the 25-14 win. Powell finished the night with eight kills, eight digs, three service aces, and one block. Alex Caliendo (Windsor, Conn.) would get each of two kills on the night in the final set to lead the Pride.

Both teams fill face Elms College in their next games. The Pride will host the Blazers on Monday, March 25 at 7:00 p.m., while the Nighthawks will travel to Elms on Wednesday, March 27 for a 7:00 p.m. matchup.
