Robert Wood Selected as GNAC Rookie of Year

WINTHROP, Mass. – Freshman Robert Wood (Cathedral City, Calif.) has been voted the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Men's Swimming and Diving Rookie of the Year by the league coaches, as the swimming and diving awards were announced Monday.

Wood, a four-time GNAC Rookie of the Week, led the Pride to a third place finish at the GNAC Championships and an eighth place finish at the NEISDA Championships. He was one of two male swimmers to win all three individual events he entered at the conference championships, touching the wall first in the 200 freestyle, 500 freestyle, and 200 individual medley.

At the New England Championships, Wood totaled 45 individual points as he finished second in the 500 freestyle, fourth in the 200 freestyle, and sixth in the 200 individual medley. Besides the 200 freestyle (1:46.53) and 500 freestyle (4:50.80), he also posted a season-best time of 50.25 seconds in the 100 freestyle as he led off the 400 freestyle relay in the preliminaries.

"Robert really came into his own by the spring semester and finished off the season with tremendous results and best times at the GNAC and NEISDA Championships," head coach James Sweeney said. "He has a great feel for the water and is a very tough competitor, which really showed at the championships."

In addition, two Regis College juniors were named to the GNAC All-Sportsmanship Teams. Thalia Bowie (Lexington, Mass.) was chosen to represent the women's swimming and diving team, and Grant Kollien (Acton, Mass.) is the representative for the men's swimming and diving squad for the second straight year.

"Thalia is one of our hardest working swimmers and she is very supportive of her teammates. She is always very gracious with her competitors after she races," continued Sweeney. "Grant exemplifies good sportsmanship and is a great leader for the team. He always gives it his best and demonstrates great support for his competitors."

While the Pride men finished third at the GNAC Championships and eighth at the NEISDA Championships in 2019-20, the Regis women's swimming and diving team placed second at the conference meet and a program-best fifth at the New England Championships.
