NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Regis College battled against Albertus Magnus in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) men's basketball matchup but ultimately fell short, 78-61, on Saturday.
The Pride controlled the pace early, holding a narrow 21-20 lead midway through the first half. However, the Falcons responded with an 8-0 run, surging ahead 34-21. A series of three-pointers and jump shots extended Albertus Magnus' advantage, pushing their lead to 20 points at halftime, with Regis trailing 52-32.
Regis came out strong in the second half, scoring the first four baskets, including a layup from Russell Rau (Westminster, Mass.), a jump shot from Tate Pike (Bellingham, Mass.), and two free throws from Marcus Longmire II (Vallejo, Calif.) to cut the deficit to 14. The Pride continued to chip away, coming within 11 points after a free throw from Jamir Harvey (Robbins, Ill.). However, consistent free throws from Albertus Magnus helped the Falcons rebuild a 20-point lead with under three minutes remaining.
Regis attempted one final push, highlighted by a three-pointer from Dan Grasso (Norwood, Mass.), but Albertus Magnus held firm to secure the 78-61 victory.
Rau led the Pride with 19 points and five rebounds while Rob Elliot (Willington, Conn.) collected 10 points off the bench and seven rebounds.
Overall, Albertus Magnus went 26-for-35 from the free throw line, recording a shooting percentage of 74.3%.
Regis (8-15, 3-9 GNAC) will host Colby-Sawyer on Tuesday, February, 18, at 7:00 p.m.
