WESTON, Mass. – The University of Saint Joseph, took control and never looked back, defeating Regis College, 101-67, Saturday afternoon in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) men's basketball game at Higgins Court.
Russell Rau (Westminster, Mass.) led the Pride with 21 points, three rebounds, four assists, and one steal. Gehrig Brynda (Deerfield, Mass.) contributed 12 points, four rebounds, with one assist and one steal, while Aamyr Sullivan (Middletown, N.Y.) collected 10 points, two rebounds and three assists.
After nearly three minutes with no basket made from either team, Regis opened up the contest with a jump shot from Brynda. Both teams went point for point until the Blue Jays went on a 5-2 run to lead 13-10. Two free throws and a three-pointer from Rau would eventually tie the game at 15 points, just before the Pride extended its brief lead with a free throw from Marcel Longmire II (Vallejo, Calif.). Both teams would battle before University of Saint Joseph pulled away with a nine point lead, leading 40-31 at halftime.
The Blue Jays opened up the second half with four points just before a layup from Brynda would close the deficit to 12. A three-pointer from Lence Altenor would start a scoring run for the Blue Jays to increase its lead at 61-40, capped by a three-pointer from Friedrich Feldrappe. The Blue Jays would keep its momentum to later finish with a 101-67 victory.
Altenor and Feldrappe led the Blue Jays with 24 points apiece, while Kevin Cummings contributed 20 points for the University of Saint Joseph.
Regis (5-12, 0-6 GNAC) is scheduled to host Emmanuel on Wednesday, Jan. 29 at 7:00 p.m.
