Men's Basketball Earns Much Needed Road Win Over Newbury

BROOKLINE, Mass. - A 15 point, 12 rebound performance by Pride senior Chris Leak Jr. (New Haven, Conn.) and a team-high 16 points for senior Sam Jean-Gilles (Melrose, Mass.) spearheaded a balanced attack for Regis College as they defeated the Newbury Nighthawks 83-70 on Saturday afternoon at Pappas Gymnasium in New England Collegiate Conference play.

Pride sophomore Ademola Afonja (Staten Island, N.Y.) and freshman Dimitri Rosa (Tiverton, R.I.) played vital roles off the bench for Regis, scoring 13 and 12 points, respectively. Afonja and Rosa combined for 25 of the Pride's 32 bench points, including 4-of-7 shooting from deep for Rosa.

The Nighthawks were led by junior Jeduan Langston (Roxbury, Mass.), who scored a game-high 32 points on 13-of-21 shooting in 33 minutes. Junior Daivon Edwards (Roxbury, Mass.) and senior Ceejae Carter (Dorchester, Mass.) each scored 10 points. Carter matched his career-high with seven assists on the afternoon.

Langston scored the Nighthawks first nine points of the game, matching the nine points the Pride put up in the opening six minutes.

A 13-0 Pride run, spanning 2:27, including a pair of three's by Rosa, would push the Pride well ahead 22-9, halfway through the first.

A Nighthawks answering run of 13-4 would get them within four. Senior Joshua Oliver (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) scored eight points in the run, including a pair of three's.

The Pride answered immediately with a 13-1 run to regain control of the first half, Rosa tallied two additional makes from beyond the arc in the span.

Leak Jr. scored the last eight points of the half for the Pride, on 4-of-4 shooting, to take a 47-30 lead into the half.

Despite the mini-runs the Nighthawks would put up, the Pride always had the response. A Nighthawks 6-0 run after halftime was answered by a 17-10 return by the Pride.

The Nighthawks were able to cut the deficit to seven with 3:52 remaining, but a 7-1 run by the Pride would close the door on the potential comeback, as the Nighthawks fell 83-70.

The victory moves the Pride to 7-15 (4-9 NECC) as they sweep the season series over the Nighthawks. Newbury falls to 1-18 (1-11 NECC) with the loss.

The Nighthawks break from NECC play with two non-conference games, the first of which is a Tuesday night tip at Dean College scheduled for 7:00 p.m. The Pride have a week off before returning to NECC action on Feb. 11 as they travel to Elms College for a 3:00 p.m. tip.
