BROOKLINE, Mass. – Regis College never trailed in a 71-57 victory over Newbury College on Saturday afternoon in a New England Collegiate Conference men's basketball game.

Sophomore forward Sam Jean-Gilles (Melrose, Mass.) shot 50% from the floor (5-for-10) to lead the Pride netting a team-high 16 points. Jeff Tagger Jr. (Brockton, Mass.) scored 15 point and added seven rebounds, while Jordan Monts (Springfield, Mass.) chipped in 12 points of his own.

Regis came out the game firing on all cylinders, offensively, jumping out to a 16-2 lead six minutes into the contest. In addition to netting four of those first 16 points, Jean-Gilles was a pest defensively, picking the pocket of senior guard Mills Carrasco (Haverhill, Mass.) leading directly to a lay-up from senior forward Ethan Peana (Staten Island, N.Y.).

However, the Nighthawks started clawing away at the deficit. Midway through the half, sophomore guard Ceejae Carter (Dorchester, Mass.) connected with senior center Cameron Owen (Concord, N.H.) at the perimeter to cut the deficit down to two possessions, 16-10. But that was as close as the Nighthawks got as the Pride took a 12-point, 33-21, lead into the locker room.

When the teams returned to the court at the start of the second period, sophomore forward Kenny Ramos (Roxbury, Mass.) capped off a mini 4-0 run to open the half with dunk on pass from senior guard Christian Sheridan (Chicago, Ill.) to cut the Pride lead back down to single digits. But Regis answered with an 8-1 run to take their largest lead of the half, 41-26 on a lay-up by junior guard Jordan Monts.

The Nighthawks made a late run late in the game. With just over six minutes to play in the contest, Carter connected with Owen at the perimeter once again to cut the deficit to nine. In the waning minutes of the game, senior guard Kwame Thompson (Brockton, Mass.) recorded four points to go along with an assist, steal and block to bring the Nighthawks back within seven points of the Pride, but it was not enough as they held on for the 14-point victory and take the season series.

The Crimson and Gold return to action on Wednesday night when they travel to Buckingham Browne and Nichols for an 8:00 p.m. game with Lesley University.
