REGIS CAPTURES GREATER BOSTON CLASSIC CHAMPIONSHIP

BOSTON, Mass. – The Regis College men's basketball team cruised past Emerson College, 67-41, to capture the Saints Great Boston Invitational Championship Sunday evening at the Jean Yawkey Center gymnasium on the Emmanuel College campus. The Pride improve to 2-0 on the year while the loss drops the Lions to 1-1.

With the score deadlocked at 6-6 in the early minutes of the contest, the Pride rattled off a 13-0 run fueled by a pair of deep threes by junior guard Chris Keaton (Beverly, Mass.) to give Regis a 19-6 cushion with 10:48 to play in the opening stanza.

A three from Emerson freshman forward John Geary (Duxbury, Mass.) ended the Lions seven minute scoreless drought to pull EC to within 10 points at 19-9, but it would be the closest they came in the half as Regis closed the opening stanza on a 16-4 run to take a 35-13 lead heading into the locker room.

The Pride held the Lions to a dismal 14.8 (4-27) shooting percentage in the half while shooting an efficient 54.5 (12-22) clip while also hold a 24-10 rebound margin at the break.

An old-fashion three point play from Regis junior guard Jordan Monts (Springfield, Mass.) made it a 39-15 score just two minutes into the second half.

A three from Emerson junior guard Tyson Hallowell (Lincoln, Mass.) pulled the Lions to within 19 at 39-20 but on the very next offensive trip for the Pride, senior forward Ethan Peana (Staten Island, N.Y.) converted another old-fashion three point play to bring the score to 42-20 with a little over 16 minutes remaining in the contest.

A put back rebound by sophomore forward Chris Leak Jr. (New Haven, Conn.) stretched the Pride lead to 55-26 with just over 10 minutes left in regulation. Regis would cruise to the 67-41 final to claim the championship crown.

Peana finished with a game-high 12 points while Tagger Jr. posted 11 points en route to being named the tournament's Most Valuable Player. Tagger Jr. was joined on the All-Tournament Team by Peana and Hector Heredia (Lawrence, Mass.).

Emerson senior guard Eli Kell-Abrams (Berkley, Calif.) finished with a team-high eight points for the Lions.

Next on tap for both squads will be Tufts University. Regis plays host to the Jumbos on Tuesday, November 18 at 7:00 PM while Emerson heads to the Medford, Mass. campus for a road contest on Friday, November 21 at 7:00 PM.
