WESTON, Mass. – Behind Kyle Bradley's (Cornwall, N.Y.) five rebounds, three assists, and game-high 19 points, the Hartwick College Hawks were able to claw their way past the Regis College men's basketball team, 70-67 in the Consolation game of the Regis College Tip-Off Tournament. The loss drops the Pride to 0-2 on the young season, while the Hawks move to 1-1 on the year.
Due to foul-trouble, the Hawks were without Pre-Season All-American Jared Suderley (Newport, N.Y.) for much of the first half. The junior forward, who knocked down 21 points in the first game of the tournament, was held scoreless in the opening 20 minutes of play. Bradley (Cornwall, N.Y.), Anthon Keane (Staten Island, N.Y.), and Peter Melanson (Little Compton, R.I.) led a balanced offensive attack for the visiting squad, knocking down seven points apiece in the first half.
The Pride, who trailed by as much as 11 points in the first half, were led by the gritty play of freshman Carlos Bermudez-Glean (Boston, Mass.). Bermudez-Glean recorded nine points and three rebounds in the opening half. The guard also had a stellar assist in the paint to Jordan Montz (Springfield, Mass.), who sank an easy bucket off the glass to close the gap and pull the Pride within four points of the visitors with just over four minutes left. Heading into halftime, the Hawks held the slight 35-30 advantage over the Pride.
Hartwick came out of the break pouring on the pressure. The visitors jumped to a commanding 16 point lead after going on a 19-8 run. Suderley would score six of his eight total points of the game during that stretch. Following a Regis timeout, the Pride regrouped and knocked down two three-pointers in a row, with one each coming from Ryan Chambers (Abington, Mass.) and Ahmad Charles (Cambridge, Mass.). Chambers, who finished the game with a team-high 16 points and four assists, was named to the Tip-Off All-Tournament Team.
The Crimson & Gold continued to chip away at the lead. Down 69-61 with just 34 seconds remaining in the game, the Pride were able to put six more points on the board to pull within three points of the Hawks. Despite the late rally, Hartwick held on to claim the victory, 70-67. Christian Laputka (Freeland, Pa.) was also named to the All-Tournament team with Chambers.
The Pride will return to action on Tuesday, November 20th, as they will host Tufts University for a 7:00 p.m. non-conference game. Hartwick will also return to action next Tuesday, as the Hawks will host Union College for an 8:00 p.m. non-conference matchup.
