WESTON, Mass. – Regis College dropped a 62-38 decision to Elms College in New England Collegiate Conference action on Tuesday night in Weston, Mass. The Pride falls to 2-3 overall and 0-1 in the NECC while Elms has won three straight overall, moving to 3-3 and 1-0 in league play. Osanto Marc's (Kissimmee, Fla.) game-high 17 points was not enough for the Pride who join NECC competition for the first time this season.
Ryan Chambers (Abington, Mass.) struck first blood for the Pride as the sophomore buried a deep triple to stake Regis to an early 3-0 lead. Elms would respond with a 9-0 run, capped off by a three pointer from Daniel Gonzalez (East Windsor, Conn.) to take a 9-3 lead with 14:53 remaining in the opening period. The Pride would get as close as three on an Osanto Marc jumper to make it a 13-10 deficit before Elms closed out the period on a 19-7 run that gave the Blazers a 32-17 edge headed into halftime.
Elms junior Jamal Hulum (Reston, Va.) led all scorers at the break with 10 points and also added six rebounds. His teammate David McDaniel (Plainfield, N.J.) also added six rebounds and four points. Daniel Gonzalez spear-headed the Elms bench attack with eight of the Blazers 11 bench points. Osanto Marc led the Pride at the half with seven points and four rebounds while Kandley Val (Boston, Mass.) had three points and four rebounds of his own.
Regis came out of the intermission firing on all cylinders as back-to-back threes and a fast break layup by Marc capped off a personal 8-1 run by the freshman, leaving the Pride trailing 36-27 with 17:21 left in the game. A Chambers three-ball made it a 39-32 deficit before Jonathon Josselin's (Medford, Mass.) driving layup left the Pride only down five with just over 12 minutes to play.
Elms' Jamal Hulum was able to stop the bleeding for the Blazers as he finished a three-point play to make it an eight point game before David McDaniel hit a jumper in transition to push the lead to 46-36. Osanto Marc's jumper at 8:18 would be the last Pride field goal as the Elms defense dug in and held the Pride scoreless for nearly seven minutes until the 1:16 mark when Josselin made a pair of freethrows. The Blazers finished the game on an 18-2 run following the Marc jumper to close out the Pride and grab their first NECC win of the season.
Elms won the rebound battle as the Blazers hauled in 42 rebounds to the Pride's 36 boards. Elms also held a 24-12 edge in points in the paint while also scoring 20 points off 17 Regis turnovers.
Osanto Marc led all scorers with 17 points while also grabbing eight rebounds and adding two assists. Jonathon Josselin scored seven points and grabbed seven rebounds while Ahmad Charles (Cambridge, Mass.) had four points and five rebounds.
Elms had three players reach double-figures led by a double-double from David McDaniel, who posted 14 points and 11 rebounds. Jamal Hulum scored 13 points and grabbed seven rebounds while Bryant Corcoran (Waterbury, Conn.) was the final player in double-figures for the Blazers with 10 points and six rebounds.
Regis returns to action in search of its first NECC win on Saturday afternoon when the Pride travels to Lesley University for a 3:00 p.m. tip-off. Elms looks to make it four in-a-row when the Blazers take on Hartwick on Friday night in non-conference action.
