NEW LONDON, N.H. – January 8, 2011 – The Colby-Sawyer men's basketball team defeated Regis College, 53-50 in The Commonwealth Coast Conference opener for both teams. The Chargers improve to 5-7 overall and 1-0 in the conference, while Regis falls to 7-6 overall and 0-1 in the TCCC.
Both teams struggled shooting the ball in the first half with percentages below 25% from the floor. The first 20 minutes was closely played with four ties and five lead changes. Colby-Sawyer made five field goals and seven free throws, while Regis hit seven field goals and one free throw in the first.
The second half began with an 11-1 run by Colby-Sawyer in the first three minutes to give the home team a 28-17 lead. Regis responded with a 10-0 run to cut the deficit to one. There were a few ties and lead changes towards the end of the game but Colby-Sawyer knocked down several crucial free throws down the stretch to secure a 53-50 victory.
Freshman Robbie Burke (Cheshire, Mass.) poured in a career-high 16 points including 10-12 from the free throw line for Colby-Sawyer. Senior Brandon Carbone (Portland, Maine) shot 5-7 from the floor for 12 points off the bench. Junior Will Bardaglio (Wayne, Maine) also recorded double figures with 11 points.
Senior Derrick Neal (Boston, Mass.) led the Pride with 15 points. Freshman Ryan Chambers (Abington, Mass.) had 11 points and seven rebounds off the bench.
Colby-Sawyer travels to New England College on Tuesday for a 7:30 pm tip. Regis also plays on Tuesday at 8:00 pm at Salve Regina.
