WENHAM, MA. -- Gordon overcame a cold shooting night and 22
turnovers to grind their way to a 61-55 victory over visiting Regis
College. The victory is the 12th straight for the Scots who
move to 16-3 overall and maintain an undefeated 8-0 record in The
Commonwealth Coast Conference action. Regis drops to 8-12
with the loss and stands at 4-4 in league play.
It was quickly apparent that Gordon would be in for a tough night,
as the Pride took control early, forcing a rash of Gordon turnovers
and jumping out to a 17-9 lead. Midway through the second
half, Gordon's defense buckled down, as the Scots held Regis to
just 5 points in the last 9:10 of the first half. During that
stretch, Aaron Trigg and David Dempsey helped spearhead the Scots'
offense, and a late layup by Dempsey put Gordon up 26-22 going into
the break.
Gordon opened the second half with a quick 8-0 burst, courtesy of a
layup from Ben Gaskill and consecutive 3-pointers from Aaron Trigg
and Brady Bajema. Gordon maintained a margin of 10-12 until
midway through the second half when the Pride put together a
run. Led by Jesse Vega (19 points), and Darrin Kelley (13
points) Regis put together a 15-4 run, courtesy of a multitude of
Gordon turnovers. Regis reduced a 47-35 deficit at the 9:18
mark to pull within 51-50 with just 3:30 to go, after Vega was
fouled on a 3-pointer and converted all 3 shots.
The score remained 51-50 until the 2:14 mark when Greg Walker was
fouled. Walker made the first free throw. After he
missed the second, freshman David Dempsey grabbed the rebound and
converted a layup. On the ensuing possession, Dempsey
rebounded a missed Regis shot and was fouled. His 2 foul
shots moved the Gordon lead to 56-50, and swung the late game
momentum in favor of the Scots. Regis was unable to pull
closer than 3 in the game's final moments and never possessed the
ball with a chance to tie or take the lead.
Dempsey posted a career high in both points and rebounds putting up
18 and 13 respectively. Aaron Trigg had 19 points to lead the
way for Gordon, while Greg Walker added 9. Both teams
struggled from the floor, as Regis shot just 36% and was 2 of 17
from distance. The Scots shot 44% and were just 2 of 9 from
3-point range.
Gordon held a massive 54-21 advantage in the rebounding department
and this helped offset their 22-6 turnover deficit.
The Scots will look to continue their winning ways on Saturday when
they host Nichols at 3PM. Regis will host Endicott on
Saturday at 3PM.
