WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – Regis College used a strong offensive effort to sweep both Anna Maria College and University of Saint Joseph during a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women's volleyball tri-match Saturday hosted by the Blue Jays at James A. Calhoun Gymnasium.
Regis 3, Anna Maria 0 (25-11, 25-12, 25-12)
Grace Fabiano (Greenland, N.H.) led the Pride with seven kills, while Ayla Albers (San Diego, Calif.) went 6-for-8 on attack attempts without an error for a .750 hitting percentage. The team combined for a season-high 19 service aces, led by Kamdyn Tenorio (Irvine, Calif.) with four aces. Tenorio also led the team with eight digs, and Bella Karpicz (Berkley, Mass.) paced the team at the net with four total blocks.
Anna Maria (1-16, 0-5 GNAC) stayed close early in the first set as the AMCATS were behind by just two points at 9-7 after kills from Rilie Mendoza and Bri Franklin. The Pride took control of the set by scoring 10 straight points, and then Regis would close out the opening set after a service error by Anna Maria.
The Pride opened a 13-4 advantage in the second set thanks in part to three service aces by Kate Truog (Brookline, Mass.), but Anna Maria fought back by scoring four of the next five points, including kills by Annie Taylor and Gia Hall. Dakota Lee (Dallas, Ore.) notched consecutive service aces to swing the momentum back to Regis' side of the net, and the Pride would close out the set with an 8-2 scoring run.
Albers earned two kills and a service ace as Regis scored four of the first five points of the third set, and then the Pride scored nine straight points, led by three aces from Tenorio and two kills by Lily DiRico (Westford, Mass.). Jana Hunt earned two service aces as Anna Maria put together a 7-3 scoring run, but Regis responded with a 9-3 scoring stretch to clinch the set and the match.
Regis 3, USJ 0 (25-11, 25-13, 25-21)
Avery Mola (Cheshire, Conn.) led the Pride with 14 kills and three service aces, plus she hit .406 in the match, while Kate Montigny (Shrewsbury, Mass.) finished with 12 kills, a team-high .450 hitting percentage, and three total blocks. Alexandra Rivera (Bristol, Conn.) dished out a season-high 35 assists, and Tenorio paced the Pride backline with 16 defensive digs.
Led by four kills from Mola, Regis scored six of the first seven points of the match and later rattled off eight unanswered points, led by Montigny with two kills and two blocks, for a 17-4 advantage. Mola collected three straight service aces as the Pride clinched the first set.
Down 3-2 in the second set after a service ace by Fernanda Ayala Rodriguez, the Pride put together a 12-5 scoring run, capped by a kill from Karpicz, to open a 14-8 lead. Regis closed out the second set with a 7-1 scoring stretch, led by Montigny with three kills and Anna Abouzeid (Taunton, Mass.) with two service aces.
Regis scored the first three points of the third set, but USJ stayed within striking distance by trading points with the Pride. After a kill by Shaye Harris and a service ace from Ericka Pryz, the Pride rattled off a 6-1 scoring run, punctuated by consecutive kills from Albers. The Blue Jays outscored the Pride 10-4 to close to within two points at 23-21, but Regis held off the USJ rally thanks to kills by Montigny and Mola.
USJ (2-13, 2-5 GNAC) was led offensively by Harris with 10 kills and Gabi Wanner with 19 assists, while Ayala Rodriguez paced the Blue Jay defense with 11 digs. However, the home team could not stop the Regis offense, as the Pride hit .317 in the match as a team, its highest percentage this season when making 100 or more attack attempts.
Regis College (13-5, 6-1 GNAC) makes two trips to Rhode Island next week, first facing Salve Regina Tuesday, Oct. 8, before taking on Johnson and Wales Friday, Oct. 11, with both matches starting at 7 p.m.
