Women’s Volleyball Clinches Second Seed in Upcoming GNAC Tourney

NEW LONDON, N.H. – Regis College took care of business Saturday, defeating Colby-Sawyer College and Albertus Magnus College in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women's volleyball tri-match at Hogan Sports Center.

With the victories, the Pride tied the program record of 24 wins in a single season and extended their GNAC winning streak to 13 matches. In addition, Regis clinched the second seed in the upcoming GNAC Women's Volleyball Tournament.

REGIS 3, COLBY-SAWYER 0 (25-16, 25-21, 25-23)

Kate Montigny (Shrewsbury, Mass.) led the Pride with 10 kills and a .563 hitting percentage, while Kamdyn Tenorio (Irvine, Calif.) finished with six kills, two service aces, and a team-high 14 defensive digs. Ahnasia Mckinney (Chelmsford, Mass.) dished out 22 assists, and Toni Ondris (Mineola, N.Y.) paced the team with five service aces.

Colby-Sawyer (6-22, 4-10 GNAC) took the early lead in the first set at 7-5 thanks to consecutive kills from Abby Williams, but the Pride quickly scored the next two points on kills by Mckinney and Tenorio. Led by two kills and a service ace from Tenorio, the Pride pulled ahead, 13-10, but the Chargers closed to within one point on consecutive Regis attack errors. Regis would eventually close out the opening set with a 9-2 scoring run, capped by consecutive service aces from Rita Dow (Nashua, N.H.).

The Pride rattled off six unanswered points early in the second set, led by Ondris with three service aces, to open an 8-3 advantage, but three kills by Delaney Skourtis and two service aces from Katie Mollberg allowed the Chargers to tie the set at 8-8. Colby-Sawyer grabbed a 14-11 lead midway through the set, but the Pride scored six straight points to regain the lead at 17-14. The two teams basically traded points the rest of the way, with Regis clinching the second set on a kill by Tenorio.

The Chargers started the third set with a service ace from Brooke Patnode and a kill by Mollberg, and the home team would eventually establish its largest lead of the day at 17-11. Down by four at 21-17 late in the set, the Pride rallied back, putting together an 8-2 scoring run to complete the sweep, led by Montigny with three kills, including on the final point of the match.

Mollberg led the Chargers with 11 kills and two service aces, while Skourtis and Ally Majenski finished with eight kills apiece. Patnode contributed 26 assists and seven digs, and Audra Fontes paced the Charger backline with 11 defensive digs.

REGIS 3, ALBERTUS MAGNUS 0 (25-10, 25-13, 25-17)

Avery Mola (Cheshire, Conn.) led the Pride with eight kills and five digs as 15 different Regis players were credited with at least one dig. Montigny hit .538 as she collected seven kills in 13 attack attempts without an error, while Ayla Albers (San Diego, Calif.) contributed six kills in the match. Allie Bietz (Branford, Conn.) distributed 13 assists, and Princesa Gonzalez (Lares, Puerto Rico) added a career-high three service aces.

In the first set, a service ace by Paula Matheus brought Albertus Magnus within one point at 4-3 before Regis scored six straight points, starting with a solo block by Grace Fabiano (Greenland, N.H.). Matheus notched a kill later in the set, but the Pride would close out the opening set with an 8-1 scoring run, led by Mola with three kills.

The Pride scored the first three points of the second set, but they could not extend their advantage through the early part of the set as the Falcons hung tough. Regis finally broke away down the stretch with a 10-1 run to close out the set, led by Dow with two kills and Gonzalez with two service aces.

Albertus Magnus (9-20, 2-12 GNAC) took the lead early in the third set thanks to consecutive kills by Colleen Edwards and went back on top two more times, both on kills by Majo Pelaez. Regis took control of the set with a 10-2 scoring run, including two kills by Albers, and would eventually clinch the set and the match on a Falcon attack error.

Pelaez led the Falcons with seven kills, plus she collected six digs, while Amanda Adru paced Albertus Magnus with eight defensive digs.

Regis College (24-7, 14-1 GNAC) will face the winner of Monday's first round tournament match between seventh seed Emmanuel and 10th seed Colby-Sawyer in a GNAC Tournament quarterfinal contest Tuesday, Nov. 7, starting at 7 p.m. at Higgins Court.
