Women’s Volleyball Sweeps Saturday Tri-Match

CHICOPEE, Mass. - Regis College extended its conference winning streak to eight matches, defeating both Dean College and Elms College, 3-0, Saturday afternoon in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women's volleyball match at Picknelly Arena.

REGIS 3, DEAN 0 (25-18, 25-19, 25-16)

Avery Mola (Cheshire, Conn.) led the Pride offensively with 10 kills, while Kamdyn Tenorio (Irvine, Calif.) finished with nine kills and a match-high 18 defensive digs. Ahnasia Mckinney (Chelmsford, Mass.) notched a double-double with 21 assists and 12 digs, Aryam Serrano-Monserrate (Lake Forest, Calif.) also collected 12 digs along with three service aces, and Grace Fabiano (Greenland, N.H.) added eight kills on a .400 hitting percentage.

After Regis scored four straight points to open a 10-5 lead in the first set, Dean rattled off four unanswered points of its own and eventually tied the set at 12-12 on a service ace by Carly Rettberg. The Bulldogs closed to within one point at 17-16, but the Pride would put together an 8-2 scoring run to close out the opening set, capped by kills from Mckinney and Kate Montigny (Shrewsbury, Mass.).

Thanks to consecutive kills by Rettberg and a service ace from Skylar Raskevitz, the Bulldogs again rallied back to tie the Pride in the second set, 9-9. Consecutive kills by both Mola and Rita Dow (Nashua, N.H.) allowed the Pride to pull out to a 19-14 advantage, but Dean would close to within two points at 21-19. Regis clinched the second set with four unanswered points, capped by kills from Montigny and Fabiano.

Fabiano notched consecutive kills to help Regis open a 4-0 lead in the third set, but Dean again battled back, tying the set at 10-10 on a kill by Rettberg. The Pride would score six straight points, capped by a block from Montigny and Fabiano, to take the lead for good. A service ace by Dow brought about match point, and Regis would clinch the contest on a Bulldog service error.

Sari Albury led the Bulldogs with five kills and a .313 hitting percentage, while three other Dean players finished with four kills apiece. Raskevitz paced the defensive effort with 15 digs.

REGIS 3, ELMS 0 (25-16, 26-24, 25-19)

Mckinney notched her fifth career triple-double with 11 kills, 21 assists, and 10 digs, while Montigny finished with nine kills on 16 attack attempts without an error for a .562 hitting percentage. Dow earned eight kills, Mola contributed seven kills and 13 digs, and Tenorio led all players with 19 defensive digs.

The Pride quickly took control in the first set, scoring four straight points to open a 10-5 advantage. Regis continually extended its lead throughout the rest of the set, clinching the opening set on a kill by Fabiano.

Elms pulled ahead in the second set 6-3 before two kills by Mckinney allowed the Pride to tie the set at 6-6. The Blazers took a three-point lead on three different occasions, the last at 17-15, but Regis would score five of the next six points to jump on top, 20-18. Down 22-21, Regis battled back to win the second set thanks in part to two kills by Mola and one kill apiece from Montigny and Mckinney.

The third set also went back and forth, with Elms pulling into an 11-11 tie midway through the set. Regis took the lead for good on a kill by Fabiano, and then the Pride closed out the set and the match with three unanswered points on a solo block by Dow, a service ace by Toni Ondris (Mineola, N.Y.), and a kill by Mola.

Samiyah Cabrera led the Blazers with seven kills and three service aces, plus she collected nine digs, while Jaylen Holman notched a double-double with 12 assists and 15 digs to go along with six kills.

Regis College (18-7, 9-1 GNAC) hosts Lasell University in a battle of two teams near the top of the GNAC standings Wednesday, Oct. 25, beginning at 7 p.m.
