Women’s Volleyball Speeds Past Blue Jays

WESTON, Mass. - Kamdyn Tenorio (Irvine, Calif.) became the third player in Regis College women's volleyball history to earn her 1,000th career dig, and the Pride used a second set rally to roll to a 3-0 victory (25-16, 26-24, 25-5) over University of Saint Joseph Friday night in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) contest at Higgins Court.

Tenorio led the team with 11 digs, picking up her 1,000th career dig in the first set as the Pride won the point to go ahead 20-11. Avery Mola (Cheshire, Conn.) paced the team offensively with nine kills, while Ahnasia Mckinney (Chelmsford, Mass.) finished with seven kills and 15 assists. Rita Dow (Nashua, N.H.) contributed five kills, a season-high five service aces, and three total blocks, and Aryam Serrano-Monserrate (Lake Forest, Calif.) added nine digs and two service aces to the winning effort.

The Blue Jays won the first three points of the match thanks in part to a kill by Rachel Heaney and a service ace from Shannon Carey, but the Pride responded with a 7-1 scoring run, capped by a kill from Mola. Later in the set, Regis posted two 5-1 scoring runs, with the second stretch clinching the opening set.

Alexandra Long earned consecutive service aces as the Blue Jays again won the first three points of the second set, and then USJ put together a 5-1 scoring run to retake the lead at 8-4. Led by Shaye Harris with two kills and a service ace, the Blue Jays would extend their advantage to 20-12, but Regis scored the next three points on consecutive kills by Mola and a kill from Mckinney.

USJ regained the serve on a Regis service error and a kill by Victoria Adler, but the Pride rattled off nine unanswered points, led by Mckinney with two kills and Mola with two service aces, to pull ahead, 24-22. A kill by Heaney and a Regis attack error allowed the Blue Jays to extend the second set, but Regis would prevail thanks to a kill by Tenorio and a USJ attack error.

Regis used the momentum from the second set comeback to control the third set right from the start by scoring seven of the first eight points, capped by a block from Mola and Dow. Hearney earned two kills as the Blue Jays tried to stay close, but the Pride would score the final 13 points of the match, led by four service aces from Dow and punctuated by a kill from Kate Montigny (Shrewsbury, Mass.) off a USJ overpass.

Heaney led the Blue Jays with seven kills and seven digs, while Long finished with 13 assists, three service aces, and six digs.

Regis College (12-6, 4-1 GNAC) concludes its stretch of six straight home matches next Thursday, Oct. 12, against Wellesley College in the Dig Pink match beginning at 7 p.m. USJ (3-15, 2-6 GNAC) also plays a non-conference match next Thursday at Western Connecticut State at 7 p.m.
