Pride Volleyball Sweeps Suffolk Thursday

BOSTON – Regis College rallied from an early deficit in each of the first two sets, then controlled the third set to complete the 3-0 (25-21, 25-19, 25-17) victory over Suffolk University Thursday night in a non-conference women's collegiate volleyball match at Smith Court.

Kamdyn Tenorio (Irvine, Calif.) finished with nine kills, a .389 hitting percentage, four service aces, and seven digs, while Kate Montigny (Shrewsbury, Mass.) collected nine kills on a .375 hitting percentage to go along with six total blocks. Emily Fagundo (Dover, N.H.) dished out 27 assists, and Mica van der Meulen (Colorado Springs, Colo.) led the backline with nine digs.

Regis jumped out to a 10-4 lead in the first set, capped by four straight points including kills from Tenorio, Montigny, and Ahnasia Mckinney (Chelmsford, Mass.). Suffolk responded with an 11-1 scoring run, led by McKenna Keowen with a kill and two service aces, to pull ahead 15-11. The Pride regained the advantage thanks to a 9-3 scoring stretch, and they would eventually close out the opening set in part on a kill by Montigny.

Keowen had two kills and a block assist early in the second set as the Rams opened a 5-2 lead, but the Pride scored the next four points as the set went back-and-forth. Two service aces by Jayla Martinez allowed Suffolk to go on top, 18-14, but Regis put together an 11-1 scoring run to finish the second set, punctuated by a Tenorio service ace.

The Pride scored eight straight points to open a 9-2 lead in the third set, and then they would extend that advantage into double digits on a service ace by Fagundo and a kill from Mckinney. After two kills by Rita Dow (Nashua, N.H.) created several match point opportunities, Suffolk extended the set with three straight points before another kill by Dow clinched the set and the match.

Suffolk (8-14) was led offensively by Keowen with 11 kills, with Kenzley Bell pacing the Ram defense with eight digs. The Pride hit .313 for the match, including a .480 hitting percentage in the third set, for their seventh contest of the season earning a hitting percentage above .300.

Regis (17-6), currently in third place in the GNAC standings with an 8-2 league mark, hosts fifth place Lasell and second place Johnson & Wales in a conference tri-match Saturday, Oct. 23, with the first match starting at 12 p.m.
